Best CDs Of 2008

It's been 11 years since Portishead released a CD & this was well worth the wait. Beth Gibbons sounds amazing as always & the music is on par with anything they've done before. Get it if you don't already have it.
The Band (love that '80s hair)
NIN has always been one of my favorite industrial groups but this album was really something special as it lacks Trenet Reznor's voice. Ghost 1-4 is essentially an album of experimental music that didn't make it somehow on any other full release. It's great daydream music & i've played it quite a bit.
Cat Power
Jukebox was just awesome! Chan Marshall has a way of taking old songs & somehow making you forget that you've ever heard the originals. This was a great way to start the year. Marshall's take on the classic Ramblin' (Wo)man is nothing less than refreshing & ultimately her most sultry song ever.
Amanda Palmer
Lead vocalist of Dresden Dolls released her solo endeavor in late 2008 & I knew it would be good but this CD was actually better than much of her work on the DD albums. Thumbs up!
You probably don't know this lady but trust me when I say she's phenomenal. Imagine the high end of Kate Bush or Tori Amos and you might get the idea. Her music on Exchange is a fusion of rock, jazz, & classical with touches of electronica. Oh, she's a classically trained pianist & an opera singer if that helps.

I was blown away by her first album several years back but she really impressed the hell outta me on this second outing. All I can say is damn. Some People Have Real Problems was the first great album of 2008 & I still play it to death.
Ex-Nightwish vocalist released her solo debut in late fall of 2007 but the states didn't get an official release until February 2008. Anyone who has ever heard her voice before know what I'm talking about. Tarja has one of the most beautiful yet enchanting voices I've ever heard before & this solo album is quite simply gorgeous.

Nine Heavens isn't the first album by Niyaz but it is living proof that International music is moving in the right direction direction. I actually found this album to be more hypnotic than their first endeavor & that's really saying a lot. Azam Ali has a strong, distinct voice which is leave you literally breathless. I can't imagine anyone with a genuine love of music who could possibly live without this album.
