I had a Christopher Reeve Superman action figure when I was little. Then it was probably the comic book inspired animated series of the early '90s that actually got me reading comics.

That's great, Count!  My grandmother sending me to the comics rack (the comics were laid out with the regular magazines in our local drug store) is what actually did it.  For a couple of bucks we got quite a stack every Sunday after mass.  Then I'd sugar out with cookies and Kool Aid, reading Batman, Richie Rich, and Spider-man.  My brother was the Archies guy.

I'm not sure exactly how, but there were two characters I identified with during my childhood: Ghost Rider and Howard the Duck.  (Obviously, I was a Mighty Marvel Marching Member.)  I remember riding around the neighborhood on my bicycle and popping wheelies just as Ghost Rider did on almost every cover, whereas I probably picked up a "bad" habit of sarcasm and questioning of authority from Steve Gerber's Howard. My nostalgia for the genre is pretty much centered on the mid 70s as that was when I was around 10 years old, possibly the "golden age" for catching the love of comics.

Great answer, Engelcox!  I read comics on and off as a kid, but started collecting later in life.  I love the 70s comics!  I still got Spider-woman, Ms. Marvel and a few Howard the Ducks!  Currently going after the entire Tomb of Dracula series with Gene Colan's great artwork.  The "bronze" age of comics from the 70s is starting to look like a great investment as kids of that time are getting older and nostalgic.

I was reading the comics when Stan Lee was creating all of the great Marvel characters. I identified most with the X-Men because they were young
