Costuming, or cosplay (a term which originated with costuming based around Japanese fiction), has taken off in the last couple of decades. Fans of everything from anime to science fiction have logged countless hours on designing, creating and perfecting their costumes.
As a person who attends multiple science fiction and pop culture conventions, I get to see many of these costumes on display. I have a very short list of cosplayers that I look forward to meeting at conventions and getting the chance to check out their latest work.
Many cosplayers have a large fan following. They even have Facebook fan pages and/or webpages solely dedicated to their work.
This list is simply a collection of characters that I enjoy seeing cosplayers tackle. While I've seen a number of brilliant anime costumes over the last few years, I'm not a very big fan of that subject, so most of my list is derived from science fiction and comic book characters.
On a personal note, I have made two very low-budget costumes of my own. I created a Doctor Octopus and a Mad-Eye Moody costume and have been making plans to start on a Klingon costume.
Thanks for reading this list. Feel free to comment on it or list your own favorite costumes!
I've only seen a couple Captain Rex costumes in person. He's my favorite clone from Star Wars and for whatever reason, cosplayers in my neck of the woods just won't attempt to build a Rex costume.
I have a friend who tops out at 6'9" tall. He is the biggest Predator costumer I've ever met and I have taken photos with him at every convention I've seen him at. His heighth coupled with his brilliant Predator costume work make him one of the best costumers I've ever personally seen.
DC Comics heroes seem to be plastered all over conventions. It might be because DC heroes have a tendency to have brightly colored costumes that attract attention or that many of them are readily available at costume stores. In any case, Supergirl is one of my favorite costumes to see at conventions. Why? Because it's a sexy costume! I have no other reason to list this costume here except that it's just a dead sexy thing. Plus, when Supergirl's at a convention, there's usually a good chance that Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, or Zatanna is with her!
The most visually striking character in the Star Wars universe proves to be quite the challenge for many costumers. I'm proud to say that I'm friends with one costumer who has perfected this character's look, movements, and overall awesomeness. He's the only person that I've seen as Maul in costume, but just one web search for the Sith assassin and you'll see plenty of other people have attempted to portray Darth Maul!
Seeing the boss of an international terrorist organization stroll through a building full of geeks is quite fun to witness. I've bumped into a few costumers dressed as Cobra Commander in recent years and for some odd reason, all of them seem to be more outgoing and fun that most other costumers. What is it about being Cobra Commander that makes people so friendly? I don't know. What I do know is that this is one snappy looking costume that I always seek out at conventions.
Poison Ivy seems to have grown in popularity among the costuming community in recent months. I've seen quite a few Poison Ivy costumes on display at conventions. I like seeing people in this costume for two reasons: 1) It's usually just a few bits of leaves and flowers tossed onto a bikini and 2) Poison Ivy's lovely hair.
Much like Supergirl, Poison Ivy makes this list for her looks!
Tom Baker's iconic version of everybody's favorite Timelord is a hit at many conventions. His poofy hair, bugged-out eyes, and legendary long scarf make him instantly recognizable. While Baker's Doctor isn't my favorite (that'd be the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison), he's such an eccentric character that I just love to see people dress as him.
Rex is my favorite clone trooper, but the Biker Scouts are my favorite original trilogy Star Wars foot soldiers. I've seen quite a few of them at conventions, but my favorite is the "fem-scout" variation on the original costume.
I've always found the villains in the Star Trek universe to be a bit bland. The only ones whoever really grabbed my attention were the Klingons before they joined the Federation. They're brutal, powerful, and have poor table manners to boot.
I know quite a few Klingon cosplayers and their costumes range from the budget-friendly to the brilliant. Still, these guys usually know how to party once the convention doors close for the day, and I've had a blast with many of them.
Last but not least, this list is capped off with the Orion Slave Girl. There's really no need to go into details as to why I love this particular costume. I personally know many of the young ladies who dress up as these characters and I have to say that they are always ready to pose for a photo with a geek like me.

So. Friggin. Cool. Getting some Halloween costume ideas here! :D
Kick ass costumes, especially Poison Ivy. I wish I had pictures, but the coolest costume still I ever saw at a convention back in 1996 was Yoshimitsu. The dude who put that together told me he put a lot of time into it and I believe him.

I pulled photos for about half of this list from the web. The pics that are mine are 2, 3, 4,and 10. I have a photo of a guy dressed as Rex, but it's not a good shot. I have a ton of Poison Ivy pics, but a few of them leave very little to the imagination. It amazes me how brave some of these ladies are walking around in skimpy leaves in a place that has more virgins per capita than Vatican City!!!
Despite looking extremely cool, I have to admit that I'm a dork. I grew up on the outskirts of the small town of Oberlin, LA. I have since relocated to the Lake Charles, LA area.I love my home state … more
