I'm not a comic book reader (yet) but Batman has always been one of my favorite heroes, which is why I decided to try this book. The Adam West TV show was before my time but, as a child, I enjoyed watching the re-runs. I've also enjoyed the various Batman movies & cartoons. My favorite rendition of the character is in Batman: The Animated Series.

I was afraid that the character that I had come to care so much about would not be portrayed well in a new medium. I was not disappointed. The Batman/Bruce Wayne character was well written.

Superman is a character that I don't care as much for. I like him but he's just not as interesting. I did find myself more sympathetic to his struggle to understand humanity in this book.

Lex Luthor is Lex Luthor, egotistical, evil-genius. Lois Lane is as annoying as ever, getting herself into trouble. I understand investigative journalism but she's just downright careless.

As for the historical aspect, I can only say that it seemed accurate enough for the casual observer. I'm sure that someone who actually lived during these times or has done extensive research could find discrepancies. I was born in the early 1980's, so my exposure to the 50's era is limited to history classes, movies, & my grandparents' stories.

Overall, the book is a quick & enjoyable read.

A novel of Superman and Batman's first meeting, set in the late 1950's. Superman and Batman have both recently revealed themselves to the world. Superman is seen as a hero, while Batman is a wanted criminal in Gotham City. The two of them meet as they both become aware of the  plotting of Lex Luthor and a Soviet general to take over the world through a variety of schemes starting with the accidental launch of some Soviet missiles. I was not impressed with this book. The 1950's setting for the …

Batman and Superman really haven't much in common, especially the "darker" version of Batman. They both operate in very different ways, one has powers while the other doesn't, etc. But comic creators for ages have felt the need to bring the two together. When it works, it works quite well.      "Enemies and Allies" is an example of that. The book is set shortly after the launch of Sputnik, and centers around a nefarious plan by Lex Luthor (shock and surprise), who is …

About this book

Wiki

As America and the Soviet Union race to build their nuclear stockpiles, two extraordinary heroes must form an uneasy alliance. These studies in opposites—shadow and light—must overcome their distrust of each other to battle evil and injustice.

Sputnik silently circles in the skies above the fabled cities of the United States as danger lurks in the Earth's darkest corners.

In Gotham, the shadowy vigilante known as the Batman haunts Gotham's streets . . . and the police are just as afraid of this Dark Knight as the city's criminals are.

In Metropolis, the notorious Lex Luthor is leveraging international tensions to build LuthorCorp into a military-industrial empire, competing against his business rival Wayne Industries, which is run by Gotham's enigmatic millionaire, Bruce Wayne. Luthor's activities have raised the interest of Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, who is beginning to realize that Luthor may stop at nothing to achieve success.

At the same time, Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen are investigating the rumored crash of a flying saucer. Clark is desperate to know if there may be other lost interplanetary visitors on Earth secretly living among them—visitors like himself.

When Batman's and Superman's paths cross, their lives change, and history will never be the same.
