Out of all the superhero franchises, this one gets the biggest shaft. It's a shame, because Fantastic Four is a popular comic series and seems to have a strong fanbase. I was never really into them, but I still knew who they were, and I actually wanted to see this film when it came out. Fifteen minutes into the film, I was incredibly disappointed. I could see that it was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek approach to one of the most famous superhero teams in existence, but it tried, and failed.
First of all, the acting was bad. The only remotely good actor in this was Ioan Gruffud as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, and even he didn't do that well. Chris Evans is drop-dead gorgeous, and his gratuitous nudity was one of the only things that kept me from walking out on this film (he's the Human Torch, so when he gets his powers, they often burn off his clothes). No full frontal nudity or anything, just abs and implied full frontal nudity. I never really liked Jessica Alba as an actress, and she and Michael Chiklis both sucked.
But as much as the main actors sucked, none of them sucked as much as Julian McMahon. Julian McMahon is the horrible actor that gets stuck playing Doctor Doom, our antagonist for the film. I'm not even sure what powers he has, all i know is that he seems to acquire more powers and more scars as the movie progresses. Jessica Alba seems to be willing to marry him even before his powers, despite the fact that he's a total jackass and Ioan Gruffud is a better guy. Julian McMahon is a horrible hammy actor and his hamminess is by far the worst thing in the movie and one of the worst villains to ever grace the silver screen
The special effects, however, were passable. The appearance of "The Thing" (Michael Chiklis) is actually not due to CGI. They actually put Michael Chiklis in a suit with air tubes in it that kept him from getting heat stroke and..well..dying. The other superheroes using their powers were also pretty realistic-looking too, but I just didn't like that they got a bit of a shock factor due to the fact that Jessica Alba has to strip to fully use her powers. I also hated that everyone besides Chris Evans was ashamed of their powers and wanted to get rid of them. I mean, Michael Chiklis I can understand, but Gruffud and Alba could go out in public and integrate into society, but Michael Chiklis is a huge rock-being that can't go out in public without being laughed at.
I really do hate this movie. The acting is bad, the story is bad, the villain is horrible, the action scenes are laughable and the comedy is just unfunny. The only good thing about the movie were the passable visual effects. I never read the comics, but I could see how fans of them would be disappointed.
If you haven't seen this movie, you shouldn't, especially if you're a fan of the comic series. By far the worst superhero film i have ever seen ( i haven't seen ghost rider, catwoman, electra, or any of that, so this will have to do). All in all, a horrible film.

didn't like this movie at all....Tim Story does not know how to direct much less adapt a comic book. Nice review!

Wow, that's some blast on this movie! I liked it though :) Although I did not like the Dr. Doom change, he was passable. And as in the comics Reed Richards did try to find some way to reverse the powers. I mean, they did get them from a space accident. And just to let you know, Catwoman is worse.

Pros: Great special effects, Jessica Alba looks good in a Victorias Secret garb. Cons: Too much time spent on back-story and emotional stuff. It's a good movie but also has room for improvement. One of the pluses of this movie is the cast. Not only is it a good cast but one filled with fresh faces. Each person also brings an impressive resume to the movie. Jessica Alba is really coming into her own with this movie as well as having a starring role in this year's earlier hit, "Sin City". Fantastic Four (titled Fantastic 4 on the DVD/Blu-ray release) is a 2005 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics comic Fantastic Four. It was directed by Tim Story, and released by 20th Century Fox. This is the second live-action Fantastic Four movie to be filmed. The previous attempt, a B-movie produced by Roger Corman only for the purpose of retaining the film rights, was never intended for a theatrical release.
The film was released in the United States on July 8, 2005. It was the third superhero film of the year, after Elektra and Batman Begins.
Marvel Comics' first family of superherodom, the Fantastic Four, hits the big screen in a light-hearted and funny adventure. It begins when down-on-his-luck genius Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd,Horatio Hornblower) has to enlist the financial and intellectual help from former schoolmate and rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon,Nip/Tuck) in order to pursue outer-space research into human DNA. Also on the trip are Reed's best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis,The Shield); his former lover, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba,Dark Angel,Sin City), who's now Doom's employee and love interest; and her hotshot-pilot brother, Johnny Storm (Chris Evans,Cellular). Things don't go as planned, of course, and the quartet becomes blessed--or is it cursed?--with superhuman powers: flexibility, brute strength, invisibility and projecting force fields, and bursting into flame. Meanwhile, Doom himself is undergoing a transformation.
