Powerful enough to run all of my applications and browse the internet at fast speeds.
Cons: I can't think of one!
The Bottom Line:
A solid choice for a small desktop that can handle general office productivity applications.
I had the good fortune to get upgraded to a new computer at work. Hoorary! The brand that was preselected was the Dell OptiPlex 780 Small Form Factor. Although small in size, this model is a powerhouse.
I am an academic librarian and I work on my computer all day long and use Windows Operating System and the Microsoft Office Suite 2003 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook E Mail) as well as Internet, Adobe and a few other basic office productivity programs. It is a must that I have a good computer in order to do my job well.
I have a smallish desk which mandated I need a smaller desktop. This Optiplex is way smaller than my old model and sleek as well. The color is black of course and it runs almost silently.
Windows XP (2002) SP2
4GB - plenty of memory to run standard office software
8X DVD Player - speed is very fast and I can run many applications at the same time.
USB Keyboard and Mouse - again, almost silent operation
Integrated Intel® 82567LM Ethernet LAN 10/100/1000 - this is literally a plug and play desktop. I plug my ethernet into my local area network and I am connected to the internet and to my networked printer.
8 USB 2.0 ports, 2 front, 6 back - This gives me plenty of room to plug in any USB devices that I have such as my digital camera, zip drives, and other printers. I like the fact that two are up front which makes it easier to plug and play.
ENERGY STAR 4.0 compliant - Great feature as it powers down after I set it to 15 minutes of inactivity. I leave my computer "on" all day long and it powers down at night. In the morning, all I do is touch my keyboard or mouse and the system powers up. It is an instantaneous power up.
Internal Speakers - Adequate speakers - nothing special. I so play musci DVD's at they sound just fine. I also listen to Pandora radio and again the quality is adequate. If music quality needs to be upgraded a pair of higher quality external speakers can easily be plugged into the back of the computer.
Dimensions & Weight - A very small unit and it fits snugly under my desk.
Monitor Specs: Dell UltraSharp 1908FP 19-inch Flat Panel Monitor with Height Adjustable - It's very easy to lift the screen up or down with the touch of my hand. It's an all in one stand. I love this feature.
Diagonal Size/Viewable Size : 19" Flat Panel Monitor - I enjoy the 19 inch screen - it is plenty big enough for all of my applications I need to use to work.
Max Resolution: 1280 x 1024 / 75 Hz - The screen is bright and very easy to read. It never hurts my eyes and I am looking at the screen for the majority of my work day.
24-bit (16.7 million colors) - The colors are vivid and sharp.
USB cable - 6 ft - Good reach for a cable - I don't use 6 feet but it's nice to know I can.
Speakers are located at the bottom of the monitor. They are adequate.
Dimensions & Weight:
Weight 12.6 lbs
To summarize, this is the perfect desktop computer for my needs. It runs silently, at a very fast speed and the graphics are sharp and clear. It is small enough that I could easily move it to another location with ease. It was more economical to purchase the computer and monitor together. I am very pleased and this computer should last me five years.
