The Bottom Line: This is solid computer; professionally designed, and well made. I would highly recommend the Micron ClientPro for business or personal use.
When I started my new job as a network engineer working for the Veterans Administration Hospital outside Chicago, I was given not a Dell, not and IBM, not a Hewlett Packard, but a MicronPC ClientPro Desktop computer, as my primary workstation. Normally, when I think of Micron, I do not think of business class workstations, but mail order home computers.
Micron was to the computer mail order business in the mid to late 90s what Gateway 2000 was in the late 1980s and early 1990s; a low-cost vendor of cutting edge technologically advanced computers at a reasonable price. But then at the turn of the century something happen (not sure what) and Micron, not unlike Gateway, lost steam, and suddenly the rising star begin to set. Since that time Micron, the company has gone through many changes, the latest of which involved a name change to just simply MPC, a new owner, the Gores Technology Group, a private concern. Throughout it all, Micron garnered a reputation for quality, and that quality lives on today in the ClientPro series of desktop computers.
The ClientPro is housed in a very slick and modern looking mid-tower case, portions of which are highlighted in brushed silver. Clocking in a 1.7Ghz Pentium 4 processor, with 256Mb of RAM (since upgraded to 512 MB), the system is ideally suited for Windows 2000 Professional, my Operating System (OS) of choice. The ClientPro comes well equipped with a stock 52x CD-ROM drive, 20GB hard drive, 3.5 floppy, 250MB internal ZIP drive, a 10/100 NIC, Sound Blaster LiveĆ, and four USB ports, two of which are very conveniently located on the front of the PC next to the floppy drive.
First Impressions:
I like my ClientPro; it works, and to me thats important. As a network administrator, I run a huge variety of software applications from my computer in order to do my job, so I need reliability as much as I need speed, and the ClientPro delivers. And while Windows 2000 Professional can slow some workstations to a crawl, the ClientPro zips along at a brisk pace.
The computer shipped with the OS, partially installed; all I needed to do was turn the computer on, personalize the software, and install an occasional driver. After about 30 minutes the computer was done installing the OS, and I had logged onto my Windows 2000 network with nary a hiccup. Older models of this workstation shipped with the simple Microsoft browser mouse, while the newer versions are equipped with the newer version only optical. The keyboard is nothing special, and while I like the click of the keys, the Caps Lock light is too dim for practical use. Oftentimes I have to squint to see it. As I stated above, I appreciate the front panel USB ports, because I routinely transfer documents back and forth between my personal laptop and the ClientPro via a memory stick. Beats a slow, memory-challenged floppy disk, all to hell!
Other than the OS, and hardware drivers, no other software ships with the PC, which leaves the user with a clean slate upon which to write his or her software palette. Drivers for the video card, sound card, and CD-ROM are included in the box with the PC, along with one 250Mb ZIP disc, and a mouse pad.
Conclusions:
This is solid computer; professionally designed, and well made. I have used the ClientPro for the last year with nary a problem. I would highly recommend the Micron (MPC) ClientPro for business or personal use.
