Top 5 video games from my childhood that I....almost beat.

  • Sep 28, 2010

I rented them, borrowed them, played them as much as I can, but it just wasn't enough. I came close, but these are those games that I never was able to beat.
1
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
The Bull Charge was nothing and neither was King Hippo's big mouth. It was Tyson. When you get to the big guy himself, the first minute and half of the first round has you dodging instant knockdown punches and the rest of the round needing to have the MOST hyper sensitive reflexes to dodge his punches. This was par for the course for beating other opponents in the game but Tyson took it to the Nth Degree and I NEVER beat him.

I didn't have a problem with the leveling up aspect. I found the hammer on Death Mountain and knew where to find Kasuto and made it through Disvalley but that was it. Upon reaching The Great Palace...that was all she wrote. While the game is nice enough to continue your quest from here if you lose but that wasn't enough. The Great Palace is almost 13 levels thick, full of powerful monsters and dead ends and I never made it to the end.

3
Rygar (NES)
The levels and action were all cool but finishing off the final boss was just too tough. Not even having the health potions and as many health blocks that I could aquire but it was no use.

4
Ninja Gaiden
I've gotten to the second to last boss and while you have unlimited continues, losing on a boss sends you back to the begining of the stage (IE boss is in level 1 part 3 and you lose you go back to level 1 part 1) and getting back to that boss and getting destroyed by it...no. All the Ninja Gaiden games are like this, fun to play but murderous challenge and an unforgiving handling of it's boss battles.

5
Double Dragon II
I am not alone in this boat. The third Double Dragon game had a high challenge that was only aided by crippled controls for your player in executing attacks, your enemies RELENTLESS ganging up on you and poor jump physics. It's too bad since if these problems were ironed out, it could be a real good game. I can get to the final boss but never defeated it. Again, like many entries on this list.

I think one and four were the hardest. Mike Tyson, Super Macho Man, and Mr. Sandman are three of the hardest bosses. It took a lot of practice and patience for me to beat them. And even with Tyson, I didn't beat him all the time. Ninja Gaiden was just hard, but what it made harder was the cheapness of the game. You kill enemies and they return as the screen shifts. The trick to beating the final boss in Rygar was to come to him with your discus weapon at the max, plus use the lightening attack that hits everything on the screen to damage him badly from a distance. I found him to be among the easiest bosses in the game.

This list is AWESOME! It definitely took me down memory lane and it's good to know that I'm not on my own in the endless battle against Tyson or Zelda II!

The final boss of Zelda II is such an anti climax if you exploit a flaw. You have to beat another boss before him though, which isn't too bad since if you have to start over again, it stays dead. Tyson sucks. You have to have hair trigger reflexes against him.

Someone should post the endings of these on youtube.com

Many have, I haven't watched all of them, just enough to make sure there was no stupid music or talking playing over the video.

beath 3 out of the 5 i agreee the last 2 were a nightmare to try to beat

The first three I think Icould have a shot at completing but I played Ninja Gaiden again after years and made it to the boss but the 2nd form is all that I could get to and I wasn't about to go through stage 6-2 again, that thing is a nightmare.

I beat Tyson...but it was only by decision. I think I hit him a few times and then just dodged and dodged and dodged....somehow managing to not get hit enough to 1) make it so that I couldn't get up again, and 2) give Tyson the decision. Oddly enough, I've found that I'm much worse at that game now than I was when I was in elementary school.

I've come close to beating him, even knocking him down in the first round and I could get to round 3 with him and this was back in the day where I heard the only way to win was by decision and later saw people win through just knocking him down. I think a lot of us as we get older our bodies just start shutting down and we see that we can't hammer those controller buttons as fast as we used to. Maybe thats why games got easier, cause the old guard is still around and still play.

Never played any of these and that's probably a good thing because if you can't beat it, then I definitely can't beat it! :P

best things to do with these games is try and enjoy them, well except Double Dragon 3. That game is stiff as a board to play and I had to give up on it. Zelda II if I played it again I'm sure I could complete but haven't picked it up again.
