My favorite NES games

  • Oct 31, 2010

That magical little 8 bit box was one of the greatest things I ever owned and kept my little mind going in my youth. Here then is a list of some of my favorite games from the NES in NO ORDER.
1
River City Ransom

A Double Dragon knockoff that would have been much better then a lot of the Double Dragon sequels. The game has Ryan and Alex who attend highschool together going across town to the rival highschool where another student has kidnapped Ryan's girlfriend and recruited gangs to stop Ryan and Alex from saving her. Use weapons, travel from place to place, learn techniques and chow down to raise your levels up. A great game and it should have had more games follow it.
See the full review, ""What do you want to do tonight? Watch Ralph and Barry BARF!?"".
2
Mega Man 3

The first game set up the series and the second one beefed it up with more stages, weapons and better sound and graphics but the third one to me is gold. Take Mega Man and Rush the dog to save the world from a mysterious new force. Well it has to be since Dr. Wily is now working with Dr. Wright, right?
See the full review, "Second time was the charm, but the third makes it better yet.".
3
Gumshoe (NES)

The only real lightgun game I played and liked with Mr. Stevenson being guided by you the player across the stage dodging bottles, cars, birds and more. Best tip as with any light gun game, get three feet in front of the screen and shoot what you want.
4
Faxanadu (NES)

Not the greatest game but one I remember friends and I loving to play. Sticky controls and some cheap spots, not to mention an item that had a reverse effect then what it was supposed to have, it was still fun gaining gold, building levels and searching towers for monsters.
See the full review, "Mythical roller-skating not in this game.".
5
Legacy of the Wizard

The monsters you battled were lame but the quest was big and your treasures were hidden. A lot of backtracking and trial and error was needed but you get that real sense of accomplishment when you finish it.
6
Classic NES Series: Legend of Zelda

A classic, in every sense of the word. Take Link, gather treasure and weapons and battle monsters to destroy Gannon. Phenomenal.
7
Kid Icarus

Mostly forgotten about having come out the same time as Metroid which became a huge franchise but Kid Icarus had great platforming and it was fun but damn it could be hard too. Take Pit the Angel through the underground dungeons, into the overworld plains and into the sky and the conquered palace to save Athena.
8
Dragon Warrior IV

I played this later but it's still great. I love all the Dragon Warrior/Quest games and out of the 4 on NES, this one is the best and I played these games more then some SNES games I had at the same time. Great game and a real good RPG experience.
See the full review, "Dost thou with to play good RPG's mi Lord?".
9
Contra

Awesome fun with a second player to go and machine gun invading aliens to pieces. This game is simple, but classic.
10
Super Mario Bros. 3

Great fun exploring, collecting power ups and traveling through 8 themed worlds. Mario had more platformers after this but not many were quite as good as this one.
11
Super Dodge Ball [Wii]

More fun from Tecmos, who brought us the aforementioned River City Ransom. Great fun with a second player or by yourself, though I would have liked playing as other teams through the single player mode.
12

This game may show no mercy but much like the Super Mario Brothers 3, took what made the first game great and built upon it. Great game and if you can finish it, pat yourself on the back since you deserve it.
13
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Floaty controls, a sharp challenge increase and unrecognizable foes didn't stop this from being fun. Tough but really fun and I like it the most out of the NES Turtles games and it helped that it was more unique compared to the other two.
See the full review, "Bogus dudes! Our game is a kids game isn't it?".
14
Double Dragon II (NES)

You could finally get some two player simultaneous action in Double Dragon on NES. The controls were a little stiff and the reversing controls depending on which way you faced was annoying but the game wasn't too hard and it was a lot of fun.

Another one of those games you can play all day long with trapping monsters and gathering treasures. Another case of a game having some bad controls with you character having poor and slow movement but the game itself is a blast to play, especially with a friend.

Excellent list. I could rant and rave and ramble more, as someone (else) who absolutely loves the NES, but alas, I will keep it at: Excellent list.

No problem. I loved the old NES and didn't want to get rid of it, but when I thought of it, playing those old games, they weren't as much fun as I thought they once were.

I really liked most of these games (though I wasn't a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Contra is probably my favorite NES game just because I spent SO much time playing. Everyone says Contra is so hard but I can go through it without getting touched once now. Mega Man 3 is awesome too. There are tons of NES games I've played through and enjoyed.
