Top 5 favorite sandbox games

Ahh, sandbox games. Giving us freedom to do what we want, when we want and sometimes how with making money and even being up to no good is the name of the game. Here are my favorite 5. Some video clips have violence and strong language.

Privateer (PC)

What a great game. You have a ship, a couple of guns and some money. Take some missions and make more money, buy better ships and get better add ons so you can do more jobs. A plot is in here and an add on made things even better with more missions. Dated by todays standards. Some voices are corny and the gameplay isn't perfect, but this Wing Commander spin off has a great place in my heart.

Red Dead Redemption

In what could be one of the greatest games of all time, this cowboy sandbox game takes you from the new world back to the dusty hills of dying west and down to Mexico and back while you are on the trails of killers. Outstanding multiplayer and plenty of side activities like hunting, gambling or even robbing can be done. This is Rockstar Games treasure for sure and for them to top it will be astounding.

Saints Row 2

Offering the level of customization that Grand Theft Auto IV could have really used as well as the feeling of advancement that makes you feel that you've accomplished something. Lots of fun, not too serious and a lot of depth in what you can buy and live your life in the game. Lets hope Grand Theft Auto V will have what this game offers.

The Godfather 2 [PS3]

What some saw as a poor followup to the original Godfather game does improve things in gameplay, the rackets you control and how you protect them. While a few things were lost like more safehouses, buying your clothes and leveling your character up. What was added does outweigh what was taken away.

Grand Theft Auto IV

What many saw as phenominal and landmark in the world of sandbox games can be a great experience but compared to the others on this list, with the exception of Godfather 2, GTA IV really does lack in some areas. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice and LONG game with plenty of great characters and surprises, atmosphere and depth, but you wish for more in this game where you want to grab a big piece of the American pie. Godfather 2 got put higher only cause it's more fun and didn't have missions where I wanted to tear my hair out.

Privateer is the only one I haven't played, and the fact you have it higher than Red Dead says something.

For me, RDR is a GREAT game. But Privateer is one of those "grew up playing it, loved it and the idea game."
