One of the best features on Nintendo's Wii console is the ability to download and play classic games...this is a feature missed by the X-Box 360 and PS3, I know, both systems have this feature, but not to the extent of the Wii...so, more often than not gamers of the latter two systems miss out on this nostalgia...that is, until, Sega released this no brainer of a title: Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Sega's Genesis Collection offers over 40 of Sega games from a more simpler era and makes them available with a simple-to-use interface on one disc. Most of the best games from Sega's last gen console are here:


Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle: A platforming game set in the Enchanted Castle - you play as Alex Kidd and advance through various levels, fighting a boss at the end of each using a rock-paper-scissors type game. (4 stars)

Alien Storm: An action game that takes place on Future Earth - Aliens have invaded Earth and disguise themselves as humans...you play as 1 of 3 special agents and try to rescue the human race while defeating the aliens. (3 stars)

Altered Beast: An action game set in Ancient Greece where you transform into Altered Beasts - There are five levels and every level has a different beast. The beasts are a werewolf, a dragon, a bear and the golden werewolf. (4 stars)

Beyond Oasis: An adventure game that takes place in the land of Oasis - You play as Ali, a young adventurer who gains powers and abilities while trying to defeat the evil dreams of the bearer of the silver armlet. (5 stars)

Bonanza Bros: A wacky side-scroller where you play as Mike and Spike - You were hired to sneak into buildings and steal treasures to test the building's security systems. (3 stars)

Columns: A puzzle game reminiscent of Tetris - Match colors either vertically, horizontally or diagonally, and they disappear. (2 stars)

Comix Zone: An action game set in the comic zone - You play as Sketch who is trapped in his own comic book...you move from image to image fighting bad guys trying to escape. (3 stars)

Decap Attack starring Chuck D. Head: A side-scroller where you play as a mummy using your head as a weapon. (3 stars)

Dr. Robotnik's MBM: A puzzle game reminiscent of Tetris - Beans fall from the top and you must match them up in groups of four. (2 stars)

Dynamite Headdy: A platform game set in the puppet world - You play as Headdy and traverse 9 levels trying to defeat Dark Demon. (4 stars)

Ecco the Dolphin: A platformer set in an ocean - You play as Ecco, a dolphin that has been displaced from his pod and wants to be reunited with his family. (5 stars)

Ecco II: The Tides of Time: Similar to 1, but Ecco travels through time. (5 stars)

E-SWAT: An action game - You play as a rookie SWAT member trying to make a name for himself by bringing down the evil organization known the Evil E.Y.E. (3 stars)

Fatal Labyrinth: An RPG - you play as Trykaar and travel to Castle Dragonia seeking a rare artifact to stop an impending doom. (3 stars)

Flicky: A platformer - You play as a little blue bird trying to find your lost chicks while trying to avoid the striped cats. (2 stars)

Gain Ground: A strategy/shooting game - The object of the game is to try an reach the exit while strategically eliminating enemies as you move around. (4 stars)

Golden Axe I: A side-scroller - you play as 1 of 3 characters (a Dwarf, Barbarian or Amazon) defeating bad guys and ultimately confront your nemesis Death Adder. (5 stars)

Golden Axe II: Similar to 1 but this time you are after a headless knight named Dark Guld. (4 stars)

Golden Axe III: Similar as 1 but with new characters (a barbarian, amazon, giant, and panther) you are after the Prince of Darkness. (4 stars)

Kid Chameleon: A side-scroller reminiscent of the game Super Mario Bros. - you play as Kid Chameleon, trying to save the kids who are trapped in a virtual reality world. (5 stars)

Phantasy Star II: A RPG - You play as an agent sent to investigate the Biosystems Laboratory and find out if Mother Brain is malfunctioning and creating bio hazard enemies. (4 stars)

Phantasy Star III: Similar to II but spans over three generations with choices made in one generation will affect the other two. (3 stars)

Phantasy Star IV: Similar to II but takes place a thousand years after. (5 stars)

Ristar: A platformer - an evil being has invades Ristar's solar system and you must free the planets and defeat the villain known as Greedy. (5 stars)

Shining in the Darkness: An RPG - You are the son of the legendary knight, Mortred...the princess and your father have disappeared leaving you to traverse a labyrinth to find them. (4 stars)

Shining Force: An RPG - You play as a hero-in-training living in the kingdom of Guardiana...a neighboring kingdom declares war and you must discover why. (3 stars)

Shining Force 2: Similar to 1 but the villain now is Zeon, the greatest danger in the universe. (5 stars)

Shinobi III: A side-scroller - You play as a ninja trying to stop your old nemesis, Neo Zeed. (5 stars)

Sonic 3D Blast: A platformer set in the 3-d world of Sonic the Hedgehog with Sonic's old nemesis trying to make the world in his image...Sonic must collect chaos emeralds to prevent this. (3 stars)

Sonic and Knuckles: A platformer that lets you play as Tails in an effort to stop Eggrobo from wrecking havoc. (5 stars)

Sonic Spinball: A Pinball game with some platforming thrown in. (2 stars)

Sonic the Hedgehog: A platformer where you play as Sonic collecting all the Chaos Emeralds to stop Robotnik from destroying the world. (4 stars)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Similar to 1 but Sonic gets a partner - Tails. (4 stars)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Similar to 1 but with more...more...more. (3 stars)

Streets of Rage: A side-scroller - You play as 1 of 3 characters trying to stop a ruthless gang of street thugs from controlling the city. (3 stars)

Streets of Rage 2: Similar to 1 but now Mr. X is seeking revenge. (4 stars)

Streets of Rage 3: Similar to 1 but with new characters. (3 stars)

Super Thunder Blade: You control a helicopter attacking enemies with various weapons. (2 stars)

Vectorman: A side-scroller with some humor - You play as Vectorman, using various weapons trying to stop the evil Warhead. (4 stars)

Vectorman 2: Similar to 1 - Vectorman returns home after saving the Earth and gets shot down while at work...as he lands, he sets out to find the person who forced him back to Earth. (4 stars)

Shinobi 1 Arcade: A side-scroller that lets you control a ninja trying to save all of the ninjas-in-training and defeat all evil you come across. (5 stars)

Space Harrier: A shooter - You play as Harrier flying through the galaxy vanquishing evil. (5 stars)

Zaxxon: A shooter - You control a small fighter that must pilot through a technological city in order to rid the world of Zaxxon, an evil robot. (4 stars)

Golden Axe Warrior: An RPG reminiscent of the Legend Of Zelda - You must find 9 lost crystals in various dungeons to locate the Golden Axe and stop an evil giant. (4 stars)

Phantasy Star: An RPG -  A man named Nero dies while telling his sister, Alis, that the world is in great peril and she needs to team up with Odin to prevent this. (5 stars)

Congo Bongo: A lame Donkey Kong style game. (1 star)

Fantasy Zone: A horizontal-scrolling shooter reminiscent of Gradius - You play as Opa-Opa, a winged creature trying to save his home world, Fantasy Zone, from alien invaders. (4 stars)

Altered Beast Arcade: A terrible rehashing of the arcade classic side-scroller. (2 stars)

Alien Syndrome: An action game - You must navigate through various mazes destroying aliens as you seek the exit. (3 stars)


With Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection well-developed user interface, you can cycle through games easily and arrange them by your personal grades. And since the load times are almost non-existence, with three save slots for every game, hopping from game-to-game is a breeze. The game also allows multiplayer and offers achievement and trophy accomplishments for each game - making all games worth playing. All-in-all, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, offers the gamer a means to recapture those feelings of games long forgotten...couple this with the extraordinary line-up and a thirty dollar price tag...and you will know why this is one collection everyone should own.
