Tactical online shooter that takes some practice

SOCOM has been the series that defined online shooter for the playstation consoles, I will admit I have never played one before, although I have been playing a lot of online shooters since the late '90s (Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1942 are two of my favorites).  And since PS3 doesn't come with a standard headset, I picked this game up mostly for the bundled official PS3 bluetooth headset.

First of all, the game is pretty barebone compare with a lot of recently released shooters, there are no match making to speak of, it mostly uses the game browser similar to games from 3-4 years ago, so if you just join a random game, you will likely get you ass kicked by more experienced gamers.  And the game is more tactical than most of the run-and-gun shooters out there (Call of Duty 4 came to mind), you need to move carefully and use cover, as you will die with a couple of well placed shot.  The maps are generally well designed, with several natural choke point that will have most of the combat taking place, but you won't be able to just hole up and kill anyone coming your way, as there are usually alternate routes to seemingly the most defensible positions.  The graphic is good, but not really comparable to other high budget shooters that came our this year, but it's good enough that it's not a distraction.  Most people (2/3 or more) playing this game has headset, so that's a lot compare to most other shooters on the PS3, and I haven't really run into many immature people talking crap during the game, which is a plus for me, I guess due to the more tactical and team-based nature of this game, it attracts a more mature audience than the usual COD/Halo crowd.

I heard the game was very glitchy when it first released, but I bought this game about a month after release, and most of the bugs/glitches have been hammered out, as I haven't encountered any problem joining games or any glitches during game play.  However, when you first put in the game, it will take a long time to download all the latest patches (a good 45 minutes - 1 hour).

The blue tooth headset is well constructed, and it came with a cradle and cable you can connect to the PS3 while not in use, the setup is pretty straight forward, however, I find it to be a bit too bulky compare to other blue tooth headsets on the market, and after wearing it for an extended period of time, my ear will hurt a little bit, so I was a little disappointed with it, as it is my primary reason for getting this game.

All in all, the game is fun is you are willing to put in the time to learn the maps and work with your teammates, if you are a more casual shooter fan, I'd recommend sticking with COD4, as it offers more instant gratifications and flashier graphics.

Great review...I am a Socom fan not so much a COD4 fan because I don't care for respawn games. However Socom Confrontation was sort of a disappointing to me but I still login for about 10 hours a week to play because I have so many friends that play it. I can't wait for Socom 4 to be released next year. I have high hopes for it!
