Bit Trip Runner is the fourth game in the Bit Trip Series. It was developed by Gaijin Games and published by Aksys Games. It was released for download on May 17th 2010.

Bit Trip Runner is a Rhythm based platformer, a first for the series players are put in direct control of the series protagonist Commander Video as he kicks, slides, and jumps his way over and under various different obstacles in his path. The purpose of the game is to collect all the gold in the current level, if you are successful in collecting it all a bonus level is opened up for you to playthrough (bonus levels can only be played once. If you want to play it again you have to play through the level you just finished and collect all the gold). Bit Trip Runner has over 50 levels (when you count the bonus ones) there are Three Zones each with twelve levels and one boss level.

While Bit Trip Runner may seem like an easy game (from watching gameplay videos) in reality it isn’t, you have to be very precise in everything you do. Push the jump button half a second too late and you will find yourself all the way back at the beginning of the level. There are no checkpoints and no short cuts, if you miss a jump or hit an obstacle you will be thrown all the way back to the beginning of the level. Do not underestimate this game it shows you no mercy.

Graphics wise Bit Trip Runner still retains the classic 8-bit style visuals the series in known for, this time though on top of the 8-bit visuals there is also a 2D look to it. Gameplay wise Runners play style is completely different than any other Bit Trip games, (like I said before this time you control Commander Video himself, rather than various different shapes) but the difficulty remains the same. The game will get more and more hectic (nearly impossible at some points) for every change in the music, and with Runner sometimes things can get insane as massive amounts of objects will be coming at you all at once and you’ve got to remember all the different ways to avoid different objects.

Overall Bit Trip Runner is just as good as any other Bit Trip game, the music (as always) is simple but great, the gameplay is fun and addictive and for 800 Wiipoints it’s a real deal. Bit Trip Runner gets 10 out of 10.
