The Bottom Line: Explore the land of Dinosaurs through caves, eggs and building bones in 3D
A few weeks ago I found Dinosaur Adventure 3-D by Knowledge Adventure on amazon.com so I placed it on my wish list for my six-year old son. It turns out Lee checked out the wish list and sent a few items from there which included this software. When my son came home from school that day he wanted to use the computer immediately to see the Dinosaurs in action.
I used the auto play function of Windows® 95/98 and just popped the CD into the CD-Rom drive and followed the instructions to begin the program. We have since installed the program through the add/remove programs. The Macintosh version does not require any installation.
The first step is to assign a user name with up to twelve letters or numbers. Each user can have their name displayed on the list and just click on your name the next time you enter Dinosaur Adventure 3-D. The sign in screen also has the quit, help and credits buttons. The toolbar has seven features to it with the first being an arrow to indicate back or exit. Next is the island overview map, help, undo, options, leveling and inventory nest. My son has not attempted to go to other levels yet but always checks to see how many hatching crystals are in the nest and if he has a dinosaur egg.
Rolf the Parasarikiophus and his friend Pterrance assist with getting around Paleo Island to save their inhabitants from T-Rex. They give clues when there is an egg hidden on the screen. First you can go to Help by going to the island overview screen and find out where the spots are to look for hidden eggs. There are three chances to find the hidden egg. If you want to hatch an egg you first have to collect three hatching crystals by playing the other games in Dinosaur Adventure 3-D. The inventory nest only can hold one egg and three hatching crystals at a time.
What we have yet to accomplish ifs to find and hatch all nine Dinosaur eggs. Once this happens Rolf and the baby Dinosaurs teach the T-Rex a lesson. My son can sit for two-hour stretches playing all the games. When I announce it is time to take a break and I want to use the computer he always counts his eggs and crystals to see how close he is to completing the game.
While playing the various games you can click on any Dinosaur you see to view a movie about that species. Paleo Island has three time periods where each of them are made up of four screens. You can flow from period to period on these screens by cruising to the left or right of the screen and clicking on the mouse. The tar pits is a game where you have to assist Rolf jump over the floating objects to save the baby Dinosaur that is trapped on the island across the way. When Rolf sinks you get sent back to the beginning.
There is a connect-a-cave where you help Rolf rescue the Dinosaur lost inside by building a path of two to three caves. Each square is clicked on to form the line within the grids. I find this particular game boring and not as challenging as the others. You can skip the second part of this and go on to a new grid or watch the Dino be rescued.
There is a waterfall that leads you to the bone builder game. This is a favorite of my sons as he gets to reassemble the Dinosaurs and watch each one come to life on the screen. First you click on the skull to the Dinosaur you want to make and drag the bones to the spots on the skeleton you think it belongs. You can change Dinosaurs in the middle before finishing one if you are having difficulty.
The predator game gets easy after practicing with the arrow buttons a few times. To find this game you click on T-Rex as he pops out of the trees in the Jurassic period. You are to help Rolf through the jungle to rescue a stranded Brachiosaurus and avoid T-Rex while doing this. The arrows can be utilized on the screen or the keyboard to get Rolf before T-Rex gets to him. Since this is the jungle there will be other creatures and leaves in the way that will make this more difficult.
Scrambled eggs is a game to match the eggs and get to see a movie about the particular Dinosaur you paired. The game ends once you have clicked on all the matching eggs. You begin this one by picking an egg that is free to one side and it will be highlighted while you select the mate to that egg. To change your selection you can click on the egg another time to try for another match. My son enjoys doing this one many times in his two-hour seating.
Another favorite of his is the Galloping Gallimimuses, which is accessible by the canyon in the Cretaceous period. Here you guide Rolf who is helping the Gallimimuses get out of the canyon and away from the T-Rex. Here you move the mouse left and right and help Rolf jump over the moving obstacles on the way out of the cave. This game has lots of sound effects with the stampede of the Dinosaurs.
My six-year old likes to move all around the time periods in search of the Dinosaur eggs and clicks on the games along the way and checks for crystals. These games help him learn about the land of the Dinosaurs and how to spell the names and get more facts and trivia on each of them. The time periods are interesting to learn about as well.

The recommended age for Dinosaur Adventure 3-D is four to eight years old. My son seems to be at the best age to grasp all the games and is a huge fan of Dinosaurs to begin with. This sells in the $17.99 price range at most of the software dealers and toy stores.
This is the new version that has seven games plus eighteen movie clips on the various Dinosaurs profiled within Dinosaur Adventure 3-D. A satisfaction guarantee is limited to one year, where you return the product to their offices for an exchange of equal value or a refund of your money.
My five-year old son will stand behind the six-year old and watch him play all the games and when no one is looking he seems interested in watching the screen. This is also assisting me in learning about these Dinosaurs that my son is so interested in and at least knowing how to say their names the correct way.

About this video game
Knowledge Adventure's Dinosaur Adventure 3-D is for any child with a love of dinosaurs! From the start it is a fun-filled, easy to navigate adventure. Rolf the Parasarolophus and Pterrance the Pteranadon guide kids through a 3-D island of movies, games and activities. Arcade style games as well as thinking games will keep them entertained for hours. And there's a workbook that you can print out for even more fun. The 3-D rendering is very good, flying kids over mountains, rushing down rivers and running through valleys. Overall, it covers all the best aspects of children's software - thinking, doing, and of course, having fun!
