I can't believe how great this game is and how little attention it's getting. Just Cause 2 is an absolutely amazing in every aspect. I think "Eidos" who is the maker of this game could school many of the other game makers who release sub-par games for the PS3. In my opinion this is the best game ever developed by far. It simply blows away the competition! Just Cause 2 just goes to show you what can be accomplished when you utilize the powerful PS3 processor and use a little imagination.
Game play takes place on the huge island nation of Panau. Rival gangs are battling a ruthless and oppressive regime. You work to gain the trust of each of the gangs and complete missions for them. The gangs will then assist you along the way and even supply you with weapons and vehicles at the start of most missions.
The island nation of Panau is about 600 square miles, which is beyond massive for a video game. You can explore the entire nation however you please and you can also complete missions in any order. Your main objective in the game is to create chaos but destroying government facilities. As you create chaos your score will build and you will unlock additional missions. As you complete missions you will also unlock new missions.
There are over 100 air, sea and land vehicles to choose from. Many of them have multi-point movement so you can drive or hop into a gun turret or even ride on top of the vehicle. There are many different vehicle types to choose from including motorcycles, dirt bikes, four wheelers, cars, trucks, civilian helicopters, military attack helicopters, civilian jets, military fighter jets, huge jumbo jets, tanks and armored personnel vehicles. You can explore the air, land water and underwater environments.
The environment is very destructible, you can totally destroy vehicles, buildings, enemies and landscape. In fact the game encourages you to cause carnage and rewards you with chaos points.
Weapons include single and dual hand weapons, RPG, grenade launchers, explosives, turrets, vehicle mounted weapons and you can use your grapple hook as a weapon as well. The grapple hook can also be used to quickly pull yourself across the map whether on foot or flying through the air with your parachute. You can even grapple onto vehicles like helicopters; pull the driver out and takeover the vehicle. There is so much that you can do with the grapple hook like grapple onto a person and hook the other end to a vehicle and watch him get dragged down the road. Or even grapple a person to a pressurized tank and then shoot the tank and watch the guy go flying and eventually blow up.
I have been casually playing this game for about a month now and I am only at 22% completion on the medium difficulty level. I don't expect I will get tired of playing this game anytime soon so when I eventually complete the game I plan on starting over on the hardest level.
The only thing I would ever change about this game is to add online multiplayer support. It's rumored that they might add this option at some point but I haven't confirmed it yet. I hope the rumor is true because it would be incredibly fun to play online against other players.
Update: Free downloadable ice cream truck on PSN (Playstation Network)
