Explosive action and Gorgeous graphics

Even since the "gameplay" video was shown back in E3 2005, Killzone 2 has probably been the most anticipated and hyped game for the Playstation 3, and it is finally here, and how does it fare against the massive expectation placed on it?  The result for me is mixed, but it succeeded more than it failed, and it is probably the best shooter to come out since Call of Duty 4.

You cannot discuss Killzone 2 without talking about its graphics.  The game is like a summer blockbuster, with special effects and explosions everywhere, it simply looks spectacular, and the one thing I find the most impressive is the character animation, they are very fluid and life-like, and doesn't appear robotic and awkward that plagued many other games in the genre.  However, it still suffer from the problem of too many gray and brown, in order to appear "gritty", it uses a very limited of color palette, I got a little bored of the scenery after a  while, even though the game is probably one of the best looking game out there.

The game play reminds me a lot of Call of Duty 4, with a bit of Gears of War thrown in.  It has a first person cover system that is essential to your survival, if you are not under cover, you will probably not last very long.  And if you keep dying at a certain spot, you should probably explore the environment a bit, in most instances, there are alternative route/cover points you can use to flank the enemy and make things much easier.  And you will be accompanied by squad mates through most of the game, and sometimes you'll fight in large scale battles that involves large number of troops on both side, it gave you a sense of immersion, as you truly feel like a soldier in a epic struggle.  However, I find the set pieces in Killzone 2 a little repetitive, it has few of the genuine wow moments that is abundant in Call of Duty 4, but it is still a very solid single player experience, the action is intense and thrilling throughout the game, and in no point did I feel the designer is trying to lengthen the game by adding unnecessary things to stretch it out.

One of the innovative feature in Killzone 2 multiplayer is that the different modes (team death match, catch the flag...) are combined into one game type, so as the match goes on, it will throw out different "objectives", that is usually one of the game mode, so essentially you can enjoy all the different modes in the same match.  However in the games I played, they pretty much just became team death match, most players generally ignore the objectives, since accomplishing them only give you a minor experience bump, so they are pretty much ignored, that said, if you play with clans or with a group of friends, the matches will probably be played as the designers had originally envisioned, and you will enjoy it a lot more.  But for more casual player like myself, I just want to have a quick online match, this is probably what is expected.

Despite some minor flaws, I think Killzone 2 did deliver on most areas, and it is one of the most impressive game to come out in a while, and if you are a shooter fan and a owner of Playstaion 3, you owe it to yourself to experience this game in all of its glory.

Great review. I'm retired gamer myself except for the occasional PC game. I've yet to see a game that can bring me out of retirement--like a certain genre-busting new game such as Resident Evil when it first came out. Maybe Tekken 6 will make me buy a PS3..LOL

Now I really had no plans to buy this game, ever. I thankfully work with someone who doesn't know the meaning of "shut up" and had been pestering me to buy this game constantly proclaiming that it's the best game of 2009 so far. I did give in and although it wont teach him about anything, it taught me that I should listen to him more as this is sincerely one of the most impressive games I've played on the PS3 so far. One of the main draws for this game is due to the epic and cinematic nature of …

Pros: Great action and solid graphics.     Cons: checkpoint save system, some interiors are to dark for my taste.     The Bottom Line: If you like 3D shooters and own a Playstation 3, then this is a must.     Sony and Guerilla games have combined to produce the first must have game for 2009. Killzone 2 is a non-stop thrill ride that is easily the best first person shooter developed for the Playstation 3 console. The game follows up the …
