THE SIMPSONS have had other video games in the past. Some were entertaining, while others were ho-hum. THE SIMPSONS GAME tries to do what THE SIMPSONS do best and parodies and mocks pop culture. Being a video game, the game parodies other video games. There's a fantasy world level (think EVERQUEST), a GTA-themed level, and a battle combat level (ala the MEDAL OF HONOR series). There's even one point in the game where these versions of THE SIMPSONS meet 8-bit versions of themselves.
Plot-wise, there's a lot of weird stuff happening in Springfield and each one of the Simpsons clan find they have new powers. Giant statues start walking and an alien invasion happens. To figure out what's happening the Simpsons have to meet the "creator" and convince him not to erase them when a newer THE SIMPSONS game is released in the future. They eventually do, but the "creator" (Matt Groening) is more interested in a different show he's created (FUTURAMA) and tells the Simpsons he's just using them to make more money. Towards the end of the game, Lisa uses her powers to make a stairway to heaven and challenges God in a game of Dance Dance Revolution in order to get him to give them advice on what to do.
Graphics-wise, THE SIMPSONS GAME looks very much like the animated show. You actually look like you are interacting in the world of THE SIMPSONS. Also, the game features the vocal talents of the cast so the game sounds like the show, too.
With that said, the camera angle in the game is often terrible, particularly when you are running around or jumping from platform to platform. Also, the controls don't always work the way they are supposed to work.
I enjoyed playing THE SIMPSONS GAME. It's designed so that gamers of any level can play it. It looks, sounds, and feels like the tv show, but the bad camera angles at certain points and the control issue are the games only real negatives.
Overall, the game was good. It had it's faults as well however. Graphics: The games graphics are intended to place 2 dimensional characters in a 3D world similar to many recent comic book games. It does this very well at times. During cutscenes, however, the artistry is horrible. Occasionally, the cartoon cutscenes are nice enough to come strait from the simpson's movie. Other times, they are not even to par with the original simpsons. The characters occasionally look misshaped … more
This is going to be short. I RARELY play video games, but this one had a base conceptual appeal to me. I insisted on getting it when we ordered our Xbox. I've hardly managed to get through much of it. As usual I'm flummoxed by the seemingly easiest of obstacles to overcome (How long did it take me to jump the donuts to the cake?? Don't ask). Overall, it's a highly entertaining game and not too terribly frustrating for a cerebral … more
