A Definite Game of the Year Candidate, "Uncharted 2" Pushes PS3 Gaming to a Whole New Level!
Nov 11, 2009
If there was never a poster child for the Playstation 3, there is now with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The hype revolving around this game was definitely something to talk about, but no one expected Uncharted 2 to be this good. The minute that you start this game, you're thrust into a really bad situation and the action doesn't stop from that point on. On top of that, the game plays out like a Hollywood movie. With great voice acting from Nolan North (Drake), Farscape and Stargate SG-1's Claudia Black (Chloe) andStar Trek Deep Space Nine'sRene Auberjonois (Schafer), Uncharted 2 becomes an extremely convincing video game. Among Thieves is also the first game in the past couple of years since the PS3 has come out that crosses the cut scene to gameplay barrier. Throughout the game, it was actually hard to tell sometimes if a "movie" scene was over, yet another reason Uncharted 2 is up for game of the year.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves takes place a couple of years after the events of Drake's Fortune. Nathan has become complacent and doesn't mind sitting on the beach and just relaxing, but then some old friends come along to make him an offer, one being his old business partner Flynn and the other being his ex Chloe Frazer. They want Nate to help steal a Mongolian oil lamp. Hesitantly, Drake agrees, but when the job is done, Flynn double crosses Drake and leaves him to the authorities. Flynn steals the map that was inside the lamp that showed Marco Polo's fleet transporting something called the Cintimani Stone from Shambhala. Now in jail, Nate is bailed out by his old friend Sullivan and Chloe, who had nothing to do with Flynn double crossing him. Now the two must find Flynn and the map, but things get difficult when they realize that Flynn is working for a mad Serbian war criminal named Lazarevic, who is hell bent on getting his hands on the Cintimani stone and its power at any cost.
I played a lot of games this past year going from late summer now to almost early winter. Among them were games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Madden 10,Uncharted 2 and currently Modern Warfare 2. While a game like MW2 is very photo real to a point where you feel like you might actually be at war,I felt the most immersed in Uncharted. When I played the game, I felt as if I was Nathan Drake, going on all these crazy adventures and getting screwed over multiple times. It was the stunning graphics of the game, the language, the acting. You never talk acting about a video game and here we are talking about it! The gameplay of Uncharted 2 is so smooth, making every move he makes feel like one of your own. There are points during the game where you're hanging for dear life and if you think Drake is feeling fear in the game, think about the fear your feeling of falling and having to start over. Uncharted 2 is the first game that really brings a human dynamic into the video gaming world.
A lot of people will say the opposite, but I think the human factor comes from the game being in the third person. While I like a good FPS (first person shooter), I can never become the character that I'm playing with because as a player, you can't see him where as playing with Drake, you see all of his movements and structure. Third person shooters give games so much more freedom, like being able to roll or get into more mele fights and that's what makes Uncharted 2 so much more fun and realistic. While all games stretch the limits of possibility, everything done in Uncharted 2, is theoretically possible...for the most part. When you have a game that looks and plays like a movie, the more you're going to want to become a part of what's going on inside game land.
Among Thieves is an extremely smooth game overall. Especially during long drawn out gun fights (I say that in a good way). Going from shooting a bunch of rounds to all of a sudden ducking for cover is one of the smoothest transitions in the game. A lot of the climbing is also very smooth when it comes to the transition. It might takes gamers a couple of tries to get fully comfortable with the system, but once you are, it's a lot of fun diving for lamp posts. Like I said above, the transition from cut scene to gameplay is very deceiving (again in a good way) as the graphics these days are one in the same, helping make Uncharted 2 the most photo real game next to the Modern Warfare series.
This is definitely a game that is going to be talked about for a long time. X-Box has Halo and now we have Uncharted. Doesn't sound as good? Play it and then talk to me. With almost nothing bad to say about this game the only real issue with it is it's overly long loading times. Then again, with everything that Uncharted 2has to load up, render and put on the screen, this comes as no surprise and actually ends up being worth the wait as once you start playing, you won't be able to turn it off. There is no doubt that Sony and Naught Dog are already thinking up a sequel to the now popular Uncharted series and if they keep it up, they'll top this one, BIG 5/5! Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is out now exclusively for the Playstation 3.
When the first Uncharted was released back in 2007, it was heralded as a showcase for PS3's graphical prowess, and it also received almost universal acclaim for its combination of gunplay and acrobatic actions, however, the first game never really did much for me, while I had some fun playing through the game, I wasn't too impressed and I gave the game away after I beat it. So when Uncharted 2 was announced, I wasn't all that excited, expecting it to be more of the same, but the gaming press … more
In 2007, just a year after the release of the Playstation 3, a little game called Uncharted: Drake's Fortune dropped down. It was by far one of the best games on the PS3. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was a masterpiece. Unfortunately the adventure wasn't very long. Uncharted 2 is much better than the game which precedes it by keeping intact what worked, but keeping the action coming swiftly and even improving on areas the first game didn't do so well in. … more
I promise to make this 100% Spoiler free, but I must say that after experiencing that which is Uncharted 2, this game is pretty solid indeed. If you enjoyed the first Uncharted then this one will be an extremely enjoyable experience. This game lasts more than 2-4 hours longer than the previous one, tops the cake for having some of the best cinematics, graphics, and sound experience offered on the PS3. One of the features that I was a bit weary about was the multiplayer because … more
Let me just start off by saying WOW! This game is amazing in every aspect. The graphics are probably the best that I have seen so far. The game play and storyline are incredible and very realistic in every way. Naughty Dog really outdone themselves on this game and it's no wonder this game has an average 5 star rating on Amazon. I would consider this the best game to be released on the Playstation 3 so far. I was a big fan of Uncharted Drake's Fortune but this game is new and improved in … more
Uncharted 2 is impressive. It is easily one of the best games on the PS3. Those who enjoyed the first one just might like Uncharted 2 better because it improves upon its prequel in various ways and ups the ante. If you enjoyed Nathan Drake's first adventure... there's not reason not to give his second a try.
