The Smackdown wrestling games started pretty good but would often change the controls from game to game making you re-learn the simple game mechanics or over complicate the game with stupid timing puzzles or controller manipulation/  All Stars takes a welcome break from this with a more arcade style action game that anyone can get into kinda like WWF Wrestlefest.

The gameplay is a little cut down from the regular WWE wrestling games, but meant to be simplified.  You get regular 1 on 1's, 2 on 2s, 3 and 4 man elimination matches, cage matches, handicap matches and extreme rules matches with bats and 2 x 4's as weapons.  Pick your wrestler and your opponent and have fun.  Theres big man wrestlers with power punches, grapplers with strong throws and even acrobats who can dart around and out of the ring.  Being more of a "party" game in an arcade style over the normal games, the controls are simplifed down to standard punches and throws, heavy punches and throws, signature moves and the finisher.  Landing attacks builds the meter up for signature moves and from there, the finisher.  All special attacks are executed with a wave motion line, from reversals to signature attacks like The Rock's Samoan Drop, Big Shows Cobra Clutch Back Breaker and Eddie Guererro's Three Amigo Suplex's.  Finishers have a gold aura and can almost strike with a KO to your opponent and are presnt and accounted for:  Bret Hart's Sharpshooter, Hogan's Leg Drop, Triple H's Pedigree and Cena's Attitude Adjustment among all the others.

There is also fantasy match ups like "Greatest Big Man" where Big Show and Andre the Giant face off to see who is the greatest big man or who is the coolest wrestler past of present, Randy Savage or John Morrison or best lifestyle match, the beer guzzling and bird flipping Steve Austin or the straight edge C.M. Punk.  There are also story lines like going up to face Randy Orton at Wrestlemania or who is the best tag team, your team or DX?

There are many unlockable characters like Mr. Perfect, Kane, Sgt Slaughter among others with alternate costumes like Shawn Michaels in DX 09 wear or his classic "sexy boy" look.  There are no divas in the game and given the weird graphics, that could be a good thing.  A create a Wrestler feature is available too to make your own custom character.

The Graphics are cartoony caricatures of our favorite stars which are big larger then life looking with almost that 90's comic style of tiny head and over muscular physiques.  Some characters like Andre the Giant with his red shorts look like giant lumpy mounds of Play Doh.  Sounds are crisp with thuds whacks and slams.  Crowd noises are crisp and clear and we have Good Ol' JR and Jerry Lawler on commentary and THANK GOD NO MICHAEL COLE.  Music is mostly comprised of wrestler's entrance themes for better or worse and voices are present from some of the wrestlers.  Look for DLC characters like Ted DiBiase and his son and later on, the greatest Intercontinental Champion of ALL TIME, the Honky Tonk Man to be added on to the game.

The games shortcomings come from it's too simple premise.  Big characters don't seem to have any more armor then little characters and little characters can throw any large character they fight.  Big guys can't dive out of the ring but thankfully can do turnbuckle leaps.  It does add to the casualness to the game and allowing anyone to pick up a character and use them effectively for casual play.  If you still need the old depth of the regular games though, you better stick with those.

WWE All Stars is certainly a fun game and fun for what it is.  Don't come in thinking it's going to replace the Smackdown vs Raw games though and you'll need this for that more serious wrestling feel.

Great cartoony style fighting/wrestling game in the style of older arcade games. Not much depth but high on fun.
