Bruce Alexander's wonderful series fictionalizes the life and times of Sir John Fielding, a notable English magistrate and social reformer of the 18th century. In partnership with his somewhat better known half-brother, Henry Fielding, he formed the world's first professional police force, the Bow Street Runners. Despite being blinded in a navy accident at the age of 19, Sir John set up his own business, studied law and developed and implemented avant-garde ideas on crime prevention and youth employment.

If you enjoy mysteries and historical fiction and you'd like to learn about everyday life in Georgian England, look no further than this marvelous series.
