My Music Mashup Introduction

  • Feb 1, 2010
  • by
I'm not sure when "remixes" gave way to "mashups", but I've been introduced to the latter in the last couple of weeks and I thought I'd put together a quick list of stuff that I've heard.

I really like the genre connecting stuff.  Those make for an interesting new style of music, in my opinion.  I like reading the YouTube reviews when fans of the artists' original songs give praise to the new mashup.  I think they appreciate the new audience for the music they love.

This is a quick collection from a newbie to this world.  I look forward to reaction and of course, recommendations! :)
1
United State of Pop 2009
With millions of hits on YouTube, DJ Earworm and his compilations are legendary.

2
Elvis vs. 2Pac
Is this a mashup or are the theories true that Elvis and 2Pac are both alive? I like to think that maybe that's true and they recorded this together.

3
K'naan vs. Method Man vs. Eminem vs. BEP - In The Beginning
4 x goodness.  The Eminem verse seems a little off, but good mashing otherwise...

4
Trace Adkins & Soulja Boy - Honky Tonk Donk
Country mashed with rap....gotta love that there technology

6
Black Beatles
The Beatles in a mashup? Had to make the list.  They are joined by The Black Eye'd Peas and Ludicris

8
Depeche Mode vs Eurythmics
80's Heavyweights together at last! (This is a really good mashup of two songs that shouldn't work together, but they do)

9
Queen vs. Outkast - Hey We Will Rock You Ya
Queen and Outkast. Different musical styles, but similar levels of creative intelligence.

10
Beastie Boys & Bjork
This is the strangest one, but it kinda works.

What did you think of this list?

That Queen vs Outkast mashup is fascinating - usually mashups have rappers over rock songs. I love it.

just reviewed another mashup you might be interested in - Wu-Tang vs the Beatles. And have you heard the Grey Album? Along with Girl Talk, it's kind of a standard for these things.

Due this is an awesome list man! I'm lovin' K'Naan mashup!

Thanks! That K'naan one is good, but I love him solo as well.

Ya I love K'naan! I actually went to a Matisyahu concert and K'naan opened for him. It was great!

I gasped IRL when I saw this list...  I LOVE mashups!  There's a DJ up here called Party Ben who's pretty well known around town for his mashups.  He ran a weekly radio show for years with just mashups and he's also one of the guys who was instrumental in creating Club Bootie, a bi-weekly mashups event in San Francisco (they're in LA now, too!).

You can download his songs from his website, and another mashup artist you should check out is Girl Talk.  Girl Talk is a friggin' master at mashups!  Great list, JD! :D

THANKS!

I will check those and keep adding to the list. I'll probably add 5 more soon.  Someone else mentioned Girl Talk so I'll definitely have to check that out!

Thanks for the recommendations b/c I'm sort of a late comer to this mashup party!  Maybe you should make one since you're more seasoned in the art.

If I can make devora gasp, then I done did good. (see, I mashed up JD with some down home country talk right there)

Hey D. A friend of mine made me a "Girl Talk" CD w/out me even saying anything and she didn't even see that I did this list! Crazy how the world works sometimes.

Is there a Youtube video of the mashed up JD talk? :P And that's awesome! Great minds think alike ;)
