Notable Happenings of the 2000s

To go with my Stroll Down Memory Lane 2009 list, I decided to expand on it and create another to close out the decade -- except instead of finding notable happenings for the past year, I compiled ones from the entire past decade.  This list has no theme, except that each is notable, and they're, for the most part, in chronological order.  It was a bit difficult narrowing the past 10 years into just 35 data points, but here goes...
Dot-Com Bubble Burst
The dot-com bubble totally popped.
Napster opened the flood gates for peer-to-peer file sharing.
The LGBT community made huge strides.
Reality TV
Reality TV took a turn for the worse/awesome, depending on how you look at it.
George W. Bush
George W. Bush was elected as president, despite the country's opinion of him being divided half and half.
September 11 Attacks
Osama Bin Laden ordered attacks on the World Trade Tower and the Pentagon, causing one of the biggest tragedies to hit the United States.
War in Afghanistan
The Bush Administration ordered an invasion of Afghanistan to find Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda members.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
SARS became an international pandemic originating in Asia.
Iraq War
The Bush Administration ordered an invasion on Iraq to search for "weapons of mass destruction". However, none were found.
Saddam Hussein's reign was brought to an end after he went on the lamb and was subsequently captured, tried, and then executed.
Myspace trumped as the leader of social networking sites.
Facebook Platform
Now Facebook has surpassed Myspace in popularity and is the leader of social networking sites.
2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake & Tsunami
One of the most devastating earthquakes and tsunamis of all time occurred, with over a quarter million fatalities.
Desperate Housewives
Desperate Housewives became unexpectedly popular.
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina was one of the costliest and deadliest hurricanes to ever hit the United States.
Pope Benedict XVI
Pope John Paul II passed away and Pope Benedict XVI was elected to succeed him.
Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise temporarily went insane.
Britney Spears
So did Britney Spears.
Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton partied.
Scientology was more talked about than ever. Probably because of #17.
Judd Apatow
Judd Apatow released a slew of highly successful comedic films.
Rick Roll
People got rick rolled.
Virginia Tech Massacre
The deadliest school shooting ever took place at Virginia Tech.
Google took over the world. They also went on a huge shopping spree.
Benazir Bhutto
The former prime minister of Pakistan was assassinated.
iPhone 3Gs
Smartphones were hugely popularized, including the iPhone.
See the full review, "iPhone 3GS: I Don't Ever Wanna Be Without You.".
Male Pregnancy
Thomas Beatie became pregnant. Which isn't actually that big of a deal considering that he's a transgender man who still has his female reproductive organs.
The world became obsessed with twitter.
See the full review, "I can blog from my cellphone!".
Social Media
Social media changed the way people expressed themselves and communicated with each other.
2008 Summer Olympics
China showed its stuff in one of the most high tech and glitziest olympics the world had ever seen.
Lehman Brothers
Lehman Brothers filed the largest bankruptcy filing ever in the United States and sparked off our current global financial crisis.
Bernard Madoff
Bernard Madoff screwed his investors over to the tune of $20 billion in an elaborate ponzi scheme and was sentenced to over 100 years in prison.
Barack Obama
The United States elected its first black, and hippest, president.
The Swine Flu
A new strain of the flu virus originating in Mexico sparked off a global pandemic.
Michael Jackson
The King of Pop passed away very unexpectedly. This event broke the internet.

Great fun list! when did freindster ever got to the net? I've often wondered....
January 03, 2010
Thanks, Woo!  Friendster came on the scene in 2002, but got trumped out by Myspace and Facebook soon after.  It's huge in Asia though!

Thank you for not making a biased list, but a list that was fun to read and look over as far as what happened in the 'aughts.
January 03, 2010
Thanks, John! :)

Great list, Devora. I guess you already know that I wouldn't have included the likes of Paris Hilton but the news events were certainly all the ones that I would have picked. Good job!
January 02, 2010
Thanks, Paul! I wanted to keep my list diverse. Maybe I'll make one of just news stories in the future. Or maybe you can make one! :)

It's one hell of a decade, Debbie! I'm so glad to be over with it! :-) Thanks for the walk down memory lane. My most notable happening would be 7 continents all in a year ;-) What's yours?
January 01, 2010
It sure was! My most notable happening was finishing up school in record time, and then adjusting to the "real world". Oh, and I did some traveling, too, but not 7 continents! :P

Great list! I appreciate Tom's enthusiasm but his public relations area was at its weakest -- wouldn't say "insane" really, but I know what you mean. Having a great family and doing Valkere and a surprise appearance on Tropic Thunder shows he still has the right stuff. I recently watched a Bio presentation on cable. oops, I'm going off track here -- Great List! I did not know about a 35 item limit. Good thing.
January 01, 2010
Thanks, Jim! I don't know, Tom did jump on Oprah's couch, publicly shun Brooke Shields and then called Matt Lauer glib :P He's obviously toned down in recent years though. And yup, there is indeed a 35 item limit. Use to be 25, but it was up-ed a few months ago!

I've always been a Tom fan even before my involvement in Scientology, since Top Gun actually, so I am a bit biased. I agree his behavior was not the best way to go about things. I might make longer lists, now. Waiting for the fireworks now, see ya!!
January 02, 2010
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm a Tom fan, too. And my calling him "insane" is by no means an insult to him. I have a soft spot for eccentric folks and find it very endearing because, well, I'm a little nutty myself ;P Hope the fireworks were swell, and can't wait to see your lists! :)
January 02, 2010
Oh sure, no problem. I went to a get-together and saw some friends. Then I went back to my place of work, up to the 30th floor and wanted to see what kinda pix I could make from there. I'll post some on Flickr later today. Keep an eye out! Yeah, I'm a bit eccentric myself, actually. :)
