These are a few of my favorite things to do in LA during the summertime. These are the main reasons I enjoy living in Los Angeles and frequently use them as answers to my Bay Arean friends when they ask me why I live in LA. Hope you enjoy my list and I can't wait to see yours! I have a feeling I'll be changing my rankings for a while...
This is definitely #1. Cheap, delish Sangria, world-famous surprise guest DJs, BBQ and a block party vibe smack dab in the middle of Hollywood has become everyone's favorite go-to summer event. It's free with RSVP, starts at 2p, for more info: click on the title!

Summer, The Getty and outdoor concerts beneath the stars and amongst amazing art. This Saturday, July 25th Cut Chemist will be gracing the turntables at the Getty. Free Event but, you have to pay for parking at around $7-$15. For more info and concert listings, click on the title!
Throughout Southern California in the summer, there are concerts on the beach. In Santa Monica, they are on the Pier but, you can chill on the beach every Thursday for free. In Hermosa Beach, the concerts are on the beach on Sundays. I love that you can come and bring a picnic basket, some wine, a blanket and some friends to enjoy some music on the beach under the stars! I used to be the Stage Manager for this Festival and it's a blast to go to every summer. It's a traveling outdoor Shakespearean festival that goes throughout Southern California, so no matter where you live, they are sure to be headed your way. This year's performances are: As You Like It, Hamlet 2, and Love's Labour Lost. Again, you can bring a blanket, have a picnic or some wine, sit back and enjoy the Bard underneath the stars.
The Standard Downtown LA's Rooftop is always a see and be seen scene. Every Saturday and Sunday from 1p-7p, the pool party comes alive to the beats of some of LA's best DJs. The music is more "grown folk" and chill then that which you'd find later on in the night. This is the most expensive choice on the list- if you get there before 1p or through RSVP, you can get in free. However, if you come after 2p and don't have anyone on the inside, the cover is $20.The drinks are definitely pricey but, they're strong. Some people swim but, most lounge or boogie down to the beats in the sunshine.
Outdoor movies are all over LA during the summer but, this one is in a cemetery. Don't let that spook you too badly, as it did me the first time I went- you can bring a picnic, wine/alcohol and a blanket to stretch out and watch classic films. It's $10 and gets so crowded that you'll want to get there plenty early! Don't worry about boredom while you wait for the movie to start though- picnic dinner with wine while a DJ spins until the movie starts as the sun sets beneath the palms is the perfect LA summer backdrop. Check out @maromatic's review of it by clicking on the title for more info!
Is there a better way to spend a summer sunset than on a boat with some good friends and cocktails? That's what I thought! If you go through Goldstar, you can get tix for $15-$17 and the boat sails out of Marina del Rey. There are other cruises that sail along the Southern California shore as well.
@angelodignacio wrote a review of this here:http://lunch.com/t/ghg. That review inspired me to go check it out- tonight is New York Disco/Hustle Night and I thought it'd be fun to dress up and get my boogie on. The time before was Swing and it was a blast. It's free, it's outdoors so you'll want to dance more, they have free beginner classes at 6:30p before the party starts and every time is a different dance style for you to learn.
Although, this is my favorite all-around LA event, it only happens twice in the summer, so I had to put it at the end. Here is an all-day music fair where you can hear LA's most talented DJs, find some rare gems on vinyl or CD (mostly vinyl though), check out some breakdancing, listen to some on-the-rise underground LA MCs, chow down on some of the best food you'll ever have and check out some local art and countless other vendors. For more info, either contact me or click on the title!

Downtown, art, culture, booze and music....for FREE! Every second Thursday of the month the art galleries of Downtown LA open its doors in celebration of a time way back when Downtown was a pedestrian city. Again, it's on the bottom because it's year-round but, I only want to walk around outdoors in the summer! http://www.downtownartwalk.com/
