Gifts Under $30 That Give Back!

  • Dec 12, 2010
Is it possible to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas on a budget? Yes, it sure is! Check out the list below to find gifts that are all under $30 and support some amazing charities. 'Tis the season....to give love, your time and compassion to those in need!
Xeko Mission
Endangered species are the focus in this eco-adventure game. Xeco Mission is made from recycled materials and soy-based inks. A portion of proceeds goes to Conservation International, a nonprofit organization that protects biodiversity around the world.

This version is for Xeko Mission: Costa Rica and is only $17.95 new on Amazon.com.

TOMS Shoes
Have a shoe fiend on your nice list but, have no idea of their size or style? Give them this $25 TOMS Shoes Gift Card. They can shop to their hearts delight for that perfect pair to add to their collection. For each pair of TOMS shoes sold, a pair goes to a child in need.
Sari Cosmetic Cases
For the traveling beauty with a heart, give her a Vintage Sari Cosmetic Case for $10! At that price, you might as well buy one for yourself. For each one sold, Nest donates a micro-loan to a craftswoman in India to start her own business in secure market to sell her goods.

Lourdes Journals
For the aspiring writer, give them a place to jot down their thoughts, stories, poetry, etc with these gorgeous $10 Lourdes Journals from Guatemalan micro-loan recipients. What does that mean?

From Nest's website: "Nest's unique microbartering approach and commitment to ethical sourcing allow us to act as a collaborators with women artisans rather than simply consumers or importers. By knowing where our product comes from and supporting those who create it we are able to use the arts as an avenue to reduce poverty."

Hello Rewind
OK, this is the only item on here that is over $30 at a total of $50 but, I had to add it because a) I think it's a GREAT gift idea and b) it's for a cause that I have been involved with for quite a while and have a huge passion for.

For that techie in your life that won't get out of his/her fave T-shirt and you are a little over all the sweat stains, holes, coffee stains, etc: Hello Rewind will upcycle that old, treasured T-shirt into a laptop sleeve and help sex-trafficking survivors have a better future. It will cover any laptop from a 9.7" sleeve to a 17" sleeve and there's free U.S. domestic shipping for your T-shirt and laptop sleeve.

BoGo Light
For the rugged outdoorsperson in your life: BoGo Light ($30) is a solar-powered LED flashlight that can reach up to 4 feet, 6+ hours of continuous light once fully charged, waterproof, and you only have to change the batteries every two years. This actually may make a great gift for anybody that needs a flashlight!

BOGO as we bargain shoppers know means Buy One Get One. For every BoGo Light that you buy, a child in a developing country gets one- to read by or to stay safe by providing security.

At $5 each, these might be the way to go as double duty gift wrapping or a stocking stuffer! With each shopping bag sold, proceeds benefit Orphans International Worldwide. Plus, with an outside pocket- this makes the PERFECT Farmer's Market or any other market shopping bag! Go to Giggle.com and get a Giggle Tote .

Chickens in Love
For the Rock or Indie Rock music lover or DJ of your life, this $15 Chickens in Love album from: She and Him, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Fiona Apple with Jon Brion and The Punch Brothers, Dum Dum Girls, Cold War Kids, Tim and Eric, Crystal Antlers, Summer Darling, The Pity Party, The Growlers, Submarines, and The Happy Hollows raises money for 826LA Writing Programs for Children.

Colombian Plush Monkeys
For the little kids in your life, here's the ultimate 2-for-1 of the list, you get to help two causes with the purchase of one $16.50 Colombian Plush Monkey. You will be doing your part to rescue real monkeys from trafficking in Colombia and provide women and single mothers with jobs.

Relief Beads Bracelet
For the teenager in your life (the gender neutral coloring of the bracelets can be worn by both sexes), get them these relief beads for $12.99 and FREE shipping! They are handmade from sand by African tribes and assembled by refugees in Darfur. The cause that benefits from your purchase is the International's Women's Development Center in Darfur. They are currently raising funds to provide relief to malnourished children and build a Children's Malnutrition Center.

Craft Link
The PERFECT Host/ess gift: a set of 4 Red Blossom Mugs at only $25, hand painted with a different floral design. Craft Link is committed to: fair trade, artisan's social welfare, guaranteeing fair wages and safe working environments, the environment, preserving traditional skills, AND provides marketing, design, and management advice to other disadvantaged groups, like street children and people with disabilities. That's the ultimate cause with something for everyone!

Mai Handicrafts
Another great host/ess gift and under $20- check out these Recycled Colorwrap Coasters for $13.50! Mai Handicrafts was started by two social workers who were concerned about improving the lives of street children and single mothers in Ho Chi Minh City and ethnic minorities in mountain villages.

Trillium Artisans
For your kitty: Organic Catnip Slug Toy for $4.75/each from Trillium Artisans. Based out of Portland, Oregon, Trillium supports American artisans who are either not yet ready to launch their own products or are still growing their businesses. This work provides valuable income to both artisans and the organization.

For your pup, Zogoflex Dog Toys- Hurley Small for $8.00 supports the environment and a small American (Montana) company- carbon neutral shipping options, non-GMO ingredients, and no toxica materials used in production.

Thanks, Bethany! I loved putting it together- it's nice to know that you can afford X-mas and at the same time give back to some important causes. If you want a great place to shop for a cause: World of Good through eBay is a great place and where I got most of this list!
