About Me

I'd like to share what I know about: Books, Popular Music, Politics, Baseball, History

I'd like to discover more about: Technology, Nutrition, Movies, Jazz, Regional Foods

I guess I would qualify as a frustrated writer.  My work requires very little writing and so since 1999 I have been writing reviews on non-fiction books and anthology CD's on amazon.com.  I never could get into fiction.  To my way of thinking the real world is so much more interesting!  I enjoy books on history, politics, ...more

Over the centuries men have dreamed of a day when the sum of all human knowledge could be compiled in just one place.  Until a mere decade ago this concept while quite admirable seemed totally preposterous.  But new technologies were emerging and all of a sudden the idea was not so crazy.  Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger...more

There are lots of good reasons to support your locally-owned retailer.

For as long as I can remember I have always had a soft spot in my heart for locally-owned businesses.  I make it my business to support them whenever I can.  This is something that I feel very strongly about.  Aside from the fact that I derive a great deal of satisfaction of walking into a place "where everybody knows...more

Don't be afraid to try a different approach!

I have heard the same complaint since I was a teenager many moons ago.  For a great many people it is extremely difficult to meet members of the opposite sex.  Certainly there are those individuals who are popular and outgoing by nature who find themselves quite comfortable doing the bar and nightclub scene.  Certainly...more

Borders 1

When the F.W. Woolworth chain went bust back in 1997 there was a huge void left in our local shopping center.  About a year later a sign appeared in the window proclaiming  "Coming Soon.....Border's Books".   I thought the idea was preposterous because this was a huge retail space and up until that time...more

23 great books about natural and man-made disasters. (23)

Over the years I have been fascinated by books about disasters both natural and man-made. It is definitely one of my favorite genres of non-fiction books. I find that while the facts about the disaster are quite interesting I am much more interested in how and why various public officials and the members of the community react to such misfortune. Inevitably many heroes emerge from these unfortunate situations. Once again, these books...more

WOW, that's an awful lots of snow you guys are getting in the U.S. It hits us in Toronto about 2 weeks ago, just 2 days before I left! Was nearly grounded but managed to take off despite the chill. Stay warm! On the bright side, you'll have a white Christmas for sure! :-)
