If You Want Sangria By The Beach, Come Here- If You Want Excellent Food and Service, Go Elsewhere!

On a recent afternoon, Fernando and I decided to stop by Sangria on the Hermosa Pier for some drinks and an early dinner following a matinee of Terminator Salvation.

ADHD version of this review: The service was horrendous, the food was nothing special and actually made me sick, and the only thing that made this review a +1 is the Sangria, the busboy and the bartender.

People with slightly more time on their hands, I've piqued your curiositiy or you were just about to go there, here you go:

REASONS NOT TO RETURN:

SERVICE: HORRIBLE. As we approached the hostess stand, there were two young women flirting with a young surfer and talking about their crazy night the night before.  After waiting awhile, we got fed up and walked right past them to seat ourselves. As we sat down in the beautiful open air courtyard, a busboy gave us water and bread and informed us our waitress would be with us shortly.

Some time passed without a hello or I'll be right with you or a waitress in sight, so Fernando said he'd get our drinks from the bar. At this time, I was thinking of leaving. But, the whole reason I was there was for their Sangria (more on that later). After Fernando came back with our drinks and halfway through my Sangria, still no waitress. Right then, we saw three of them pass us by without a care, talking about tables then, LEAVE the restaurant to go next door to Sharkeez. I can only speculate what they did there but, both Fernando and I guessed it was some shots since they took 10 minutes to get back. Finally, they came back and a waitress appeared. Usually, I would've left because I'm a little picky about where I spend my money but, I was curious about the food and had become a little more relaxed with my Sangria.

FOOD: MADE ME SICK. I ordered Queso Enchiladas which named potatoes as its main ingredient. I thought, naively, that this meant chunks of baked potatoes with vegetables inside the enchiladas. However, when I got the Enchiladas, all I found was mashed potatoes and that was it.  I was sick to my stomach the rest of the night with a headache that I couldn't shake until the morning. Fernando ordered a Chicken Taco Plate and said that it definitely wasn't worth the $11.50 they charged.

PRICE: NOT WORTH IT. The food cost way more than it was worth, you could find a better deal with much better taste at Ortega 120, Pachanga Mexican Grill, La Paz or even Rubio's. Contrary to the value-to-taste ratio of the food, their Sangria is really reasonable with a half carafe for $7.50.

SAVING GRACES:- Sangria, dancing, bartenders and busboys.

SANGRIA: DELCIOUS. This wonderful Spanish cocktail, that ironically isn't popular with Spanish locals outside of the home (they won't order it in bars, only make it at home), is made of red or white wine, brandy or cognac, carbonated soda, a sweetner and sliced fruit. It's so good and affordable, $7.50 for a half carafe and around $24 for a full pitcher of the Especial mix (read: more liquor).

DANCING: BEST ON THE PIER. I don't go out often on the Pier but, when I do, I go here. There's not as much of the 21-year-old frat boy mentality here that's found at Sharkeez and they have two rooms with two DJs that are decent. The line gets long, so get there around 9:30p to beat it and the cover which is $10. Most imporantly, there's tons of room to dance, important for wannabe breakdancers such as myself!

BARTENDERS AND BUSBOYS:
ONLY ONES WORKING. That day with Fernando, he came back from the bar and said the bartender was really cool and attentive. The busboys were so attentive that I was upset that they weren't our waiters.

IMPORTANT TIP: You can't just sit at one of the outdoor tables on the patio to people watch while you enjoy some Sangria unless you order food. They're onto us, they know that this is their winner, so they'll make you eat something. BUT, you can go indoors or sit in the outdoor patio, back a bit but, you still get to people-watch. This is obviously what I would suggest- though, if you go to Cantina Real, you can sit outside, have a great view of the ocean (since it's on the beach) and enjoy Sangria for the same price.

I love Sangria (the drink, I mean). So, just check out the bartenders, eh? ;-) The Spanish won't order it because it's way too easy to make! Even for a non-drinker like me, I had made it at home before!

Me too....super easy, wine, brandy, sugar, fruit and voila! You're done. I should put up the recipe and review it ;p

Too funny. I keep debating giving Sangria's a try ( I have a place around the corner). About four doors down from Sangria's is Silvia's Brazilian Barbecue. The food is great - but the service sucks also. We told the hostess that we'd been waiting 15 minutes and not even been greeted by anyone on the wait staff. She looked at us blankly and did nothing. She didn't even apologize. So we just walked off in disgust and have not been back since. Damn I miss their tri-tip. I guess it's hard to get good help in the beach towns.

I know! Isn't that crazy? I guess they feel like another person will come right up to take our spots. Sivio's owners are super cool but, I've only been on off nights and just for drinks- so thanks for saving me the trouble! I live right around the corner too and wish they would clean up their act on customer service and music LOL! Mediterraneo is my fave go-to on the Pier.

I'm going to try Mediterraneo tonight since you like it so much. Thanks for the heads-up.

Definitely....try to make it for Happy Hour but, even if you have to pay full price it's worth it. I also read that you lived in Northern Nevada? Whereabouts? I moved here from Reno/Sparks!
September 03, 2009
Me too. I still have my home there. 15 miles north of Sparks on the pyramid highway in Palomino Valley.

Wow....that's perfect for Burning Man! My uncles still live in Sparks and I have friends that live in Tahoe which I definitely miss about living up there, being so close to Tahoe was what kept me sane in Reno LOL!

Everything on pier has so much potential given their perfect location and sweet outdoor patios, it's a shame that none of them live up to being any place worth returning to - if you're ever in the mood for good food and sangria, you know where to go :) - Ortega 120

I like how you have an ADHD version of your review :P  Bummer about the service, but that sangria sounds delicious!  Thanks for sharing and posting the link to the recipe :)

I can sooo hear you ranting about the service! :D So if I go, it's si' for the sangria, no for the food and don't expect good service from anyone but the busboys? Got it!

And the bartender...so you can give me a call and I'll meet you at the bar for some yummy Sangria! It's right around the corner from my house...I know, lucky me ;P

You are so right! I can't believe that you went back there are got such shitty service, AGAIN???? Remember how pushy they were about our having to order food if we wanted to be seated outside?
June 16, 2009
Totally...that's why I put that in the review. I couldn't even BELIEVE these waitresses and hostesses, just goes to show managers that they shouldn't hire someone based on looks.
