Atlantic City - Bottom of the Hard Rock Food Chain

Pros: Pretty good food; lots of memorabilia to look at

Cons: Usually a line to be seated; Poor lighting

AS you may already know, I have been to Atlantic City on several occasions. As I have mentioned in several of my travel posts, I enjoy visiting both Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock Cafe when I go to a city that has them. However, my most recent venture to the Boardwalk is the first time I've been to the Atlantic City Hard Rock Cafe.

My mother, sister, and I waited on line for a solid ten minutes, which was fine. A hostess came up to us and asked how many people were in our party. After we told her that there were three of us, our oh-so-friendly hostess said, "Not good enough" and proceeded to seat the family of four behind us. Mom and Julie were absolutely seething, and I had to calm them down before they spoke with a manager. We spoke with another host who explained to us that the other hostess was actually in training, and totally apologized for her behavior.

After being seated, our waitress came right over and took our drink and appetizer order. I passed her a note telling her it was Julie's 21st birthday. She smiled and winked at me, then headed to get our drinks.

As we were waiting for our beverages to arrive, we looked around the restaurant. It was really quite dark for 6:00 in the evening, and there was no sign of any candles or lights to brighten the place up when it got dark outside. The windows were really tinted, so we didn't even have a benefit of any sunshine. In the center of the ceiling was a dome painted in green and blue. (I think it was some sort of aquatic scene.) And, of course, there were loads of music paraphernalia. To tell you the truth, the only Hard Rock I've been to that has more paraphernalia is the one in New York.

Our drinks arrived and we toasted my sister. Mom and I opted for soft drinks while Julie went to town on a Hard Rock Iced Tea. (It's a glorified Long Island Iced Tea made with name brand liquors, such as Absolut and Bacardi.) For only $10, Julie received the enormous drink as well as a souvenir hurricane glass. Our HRC nachos shortly followed, and we really scarfed those down. They're nacho chips piled high with beans, cheese, tomatoes, salsa, and jalepeno peppers. We ordered guacamole, but passed on the optional chicken and beef.

My sister and I had the fried chicken sandwich (as per my recommendation from my great experience in New Orleans) and mom ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad. Once again, the chicken sandwich was terrific. Julie approved, too, as she completely cleaned her plate. Mom described her salad as a taste of soy and rice. Not my kind of salad, if you ask me. We also shared an order of onion rings, which I found rather greasy.

Right before we received the check, one of the other waitresses came over and made my shy sister stand on a chair. She handed Julie a cup of whipped cream with a lit candle, and proceeded to shout that it was her 21st birthday and made the entire restaurant shout "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Poor Julie (muahaha) turned bright red as she blew out the candle and stepped down from the chair. It was priceless.

Our experience at the Atlantic City Hard Rock Cafe was a good one, but not because of the food not the staff. We had fun because we were enjoying each other's company. If you're not with an out-going group, then I advise you just skip the restaurant and go directly to the merchandise shop.
