What we ordered: My companions and I started with the complimentary appetizer called Pappadum, a large, round, thin cracker served with Tamarind Chutney and Mint Sauce. The dough that the cracker had been made from tasted like it was seasoned with curry and garlic. The two sauces it was served with were both very good. The tamarind chutney was sweet and the mint sauce was very fresh and savory. I thought it was cilantro until I had the server clarify that it was indeed fresh mint.

My companions and I also ordered the Curried Mussels. These were divine! They were sauteed in a savory broth of red wine, curry and garlic. Very tender and so delicious!
We also ordered Beef and Corn Samosas. The thick, crispy wonton-like wraps were stuffed with a spiced, shredded beef with kernels of corn and deep-fried. It came with two samosas to the order but each was so big that we cut them into pieces to share.

At the suggestion of our server we also ordered a side of Naan, which is a light flatbread, similar to pita bread. It was served hot out of the oven and was delicious!
I have to admit I am not very experienced with Indian Cuisine so I wasn’t sure what to order. I thought the Korma with Shrimp sounded really good and the server confirmed that it was an excellent choice, so that is what I ordered. Fabulous! Korma is a very rich cream sauce made with pulverized pistachio, almonds and cashews, as well as garlic, lemon and shredded coconut. The sauce is on the thin side and goes perfectly atop rice. I asked for it medium spicy but it was actually very mild. I ordered shrimp to go with it which gave it more substance and texture. I enjoyed it very much, as did my companions.
One of my companions asked for the server to “surprise” her with a dish from the Vegetarian section. The server took the liberty of ordering the Bengan Bartha, a most delicious, spicy dish made of roasted eggplant, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, onion and other spices. This was one of the biggest hits of the night! The Bengan Bartha had so much flavor and was a tad spicy as well. This may be my new favorite way to eat eggplant! We tried it served over rice.
Overall Impression: The Clay Pit has excellent quality of food and a large selection of Indian cuisine on the menu. My first taste of Indian food now has me craving for it! In fact I need to look up recipes for both Korma and Bangan Bartha to make at home. Reservations are recommended as it gets very busy during the dinner hour!
