Umami Burger presented by The Good Grub

Oh mama, Umami.  I guess it's true … good things come in small packages … as long as it's cooked medium-rare, loaded up with gourmet fixins, and placed on a fluffy little bun.  But rest assured, these dare-I-say-adorable little guys come out swinging and pack a load full of deliciousness-per-square-inch.  Our buddy Michael S. was the first to tell us that Umami needed to make its way into our little journey through GRUB … but since then countless others have been singing its praise.  And rightfully so.   Located in a funky, ultra-modern little strip called Space 15 Twenty, smack dab in the middle of Hollywood, Umami is definitely down right cool.  Everything in the place has a clean, cutting-edge feel to it … from the exposed brick, to the retractable clear garage door, to the tiny little white plates about to be loaded up with their mouth watering burgers.  Gazing down at the menu, the choice was clear … I had to go with the one with its name up on the wall … The Unami Burger.  It comes medium-rare so that all the melt-your-mind juices are trapped in the patty and so that each bite is like a little trip through flavor-ville.  Pilled on top of the meaty-goodness was a perfect-little-bit-o'-crunchy-and-salty parmesan crisp and a slice of rich-with-magic balsamic-infused, roasted tomato.  But as most things in life … it all comes down to the buns.  Fresh and soft, branded with a "U" on top, and fitting in perfect symmetry with the dimensions of the burger … I finally understand feng-shui.  I pared it all up with an Allagash White from their fine beer selection, an order of skinny fries, and keeping with it's pseudo japanese flare .. the tempura onion rings.  Side note … why can't I just order everything tempura-ed?  Tempura french fries. Tempura side salad … I'm just saying, life would be better.   Sticking with the modern-designer turned burger-maniac, Unami serves up its own special ketchup blend and a little garlic-aioli mayo in tiny wonton spoons.  And let's just say, after I dipped my fries in the garlic-aioli, it took all my efforts not to just pop the spoon directly into my mouth.  It's like Mary Poppins used to say "a spoon full of garlic-aioli helps the medicine go down" … or something like that.  All in all, it was just what the doctor ordered and I'd definitely be down for running the gauntlet through all the different varieties on the menu … form the Hatch Burger with it's green chilies to the Port & Stilton with it's blue-cheese and caramelized onions … sorry, I just had to swallow 'cause my mouth was watering so much.  So grab a buddy, or better yet, grab your mama … and take a trip into Hollywood to see the starlets … or the crazy dude dressed up like Batman …  but most importantly … to get some Umami.

When Alex Franzen, the genius behind Unicorns for Socialism, suggested Umami Burger as the place to dine for our luncheon catch-up, I decided to swear off all burgers until the day came when I would be able to try Umami. Umami has a unique schtick going on, and while I could attempt to try and explain it myself, I want to finish up this review in time to watch some Price is Right. So I’ll just nab the info from the UMAMI Information Center and quote it …
