Cars Will Take Notice Of You

  • Dec 3, 2009
Pros: Cars see you!  Easy to install and use.  Lightweight.

Cons: None that I can think of.

The Bottom Line: If you are riding at night, the Spokelit will make sure you are easily seen by cars.  Literally, one ounce of protection that you can trust.

Now that the days are getting shorter, and I am still patrolling my local regional park on my mountain bike, I wanted a solution that can get me noticed when I ride on the streets to get me home safely.  I did a search on the Internet and found the NiteIze Spokelit and thought to give it a try to make sure cars can see me from the side.  Here are my experiences using the product for a month when the sun went down:

It is very easy to install the Spokelit onto your wheels.  There are two grooves that help you center the Spokelit onto your wheels and securely attach it to your spokes on your wheels.

Actual Use-
As I said above, they are securely attached.  A testament to this is when I used them on my regular off-road fire road trails.  Not one time did they come loose or shift even when going through technical downhill or very bumpy trails.  I even used them through a heavy downpour of rain and they are water resistant.  The owner's manual suggests to disassemble them to dry them when they get wet but I haven't done this and the Spokelit is doing well so far.

Regarding their attention getting attraction on the road, I am happy to say that they work extremely well.  There has been a number of times when I usually am cut off by drivers who don't see me but with the Spokelit, I feel that they give me a wide berth.  There have been occasions that I have seen cars who normally makes turns in front of me, wait for me to pass before turning.  This is especially true when I have the Spokelit in blinking mode.  It really gives me the sense of safety knowing that a driver will still notice me because of the the attention getting blinking light which is actually very bright even when I am stopped.   I would estimate that you can easily see the blinking light from a half-mile away at least.

The Spokelit also has a continuous light mode which I haven't used because my thinking is a blinking light will attract more attention than a continuous light, especially at stop lights.  There has been several occasions that I have noticed that cross traffic can see me. As I said earlier, I have noticed that they yield to me.  Also, it is welcome to have driver give me positive comments on the lights.  That means they see me!

These are actually much better than using spoke reflectors and even Tire Flys found in automotive stores that I have used in the past.  Tire Flys blink and attach to your tire's valve stem but they don't stay on for very long when you are stationary.  Also, they need to be jarred a bit in order to be activated.  Spoke reflectors don't command that much attention when stationary and don't look as nice as the Spokelit. And because I am a volunteer with police department at my local regional parks, the blinking blue light and with my police badges on my uniform seems to command attention with the automobile drivers.  I actually feel safer riding at night using the Spokelits than riding during the day.  That is how attention getting these Spokelits are in the dark.  During the day time, the Spokelits with their off-white and opaque color, actually can gain attention during the day.

Has a one button operation that controls the continuous, blinking and off modes for the Spokelit. It is also water-resistant and the battery replacement of the two 2016 batteries it uses are user accessible.  The batteries are rated for continuous use of over 25 hours before replacement.  They don't have a rating for blinking mode but I would expect the rating would be much greater than 25 hours.

Two years from date of purchase.

Using my Pelouze digital scale, the Spokelit only weighs 30 grams.

Currently $7.00 each on the NiteIze website.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the performance and use of the product.  It does what it is advertised to have automobile drivers see you from the side.  It definitely does that since I have automobile drivers yield to me and comment on the lights.  Highly recommended for the noctural rider in you!  Just make sure you use a front and rear light as well for 360 degree coverage.  Happy riding!
