Plodding Prose, Not Entertaining

China Mieville is a mixed bag for me and Embassytown just didn’t do it for me. It has an overly complicated plot, bloated pretentious writing style, shallow characters, and clumsy pacing.
Without going into a lot of detail on the plot, which would take several pages to do “justice” to, this novel is about a backwater world colonized by humans. They share the planet with the native Ariekei who have a strange language that very few humans can understand or speak. Humans have to be genetically altered to speak the aliens, who are “ambassadors.”
The primary character is Avice Benner Cho who is a human colonist who through a very strange process is “part of” the Ariekei language (don’t ask, please).
A breech between the humans and Ariekei ensue and the native being stage a revolt that all centers around their language.
Sound confusing? It is. Sound like a great novel? Think again.

Good review. I've read one China M. novel and finished it was "huh?" That was "City and the City." I tried to read "Kraken" but didn't finish it. I don't know, despite his Nebula awards, I guess his style is just not for me.

He is a mixed bag. I think his writing style is a bit overly pretentious. I actually liked City and the City but it was one of those books that people seem to love or hate. I have really liked some of his books and really disliked others.
