"Darth Plagueis" tells the story of the title character. He's a Sith Lord, and we start with him killing his master and then casting about for an apprentice, all the while trying to use the Force to unlock the secrets of immortality. We know that the apprentice will eventually be Palpatine, who will then go on to become the Emperor, but what we don't know is how exactly we get from the one state to the other, and that's what this book sets out to do.

Plagueis comes off as something of a mad scientist rather than an insane dictator. He's someone who wants to live forever and is willing to kill others to accomplish this goal; a goal he pursues using scientific techniques. He's an interesting character, and doesn't get quite as much time on the stage as he deserves once his apprentice appears.

And really, the story is more about that apprentice, in many ways. It's about how Palpatine murders his family at the age of seventeen and then goes on to be a Senator and Emperor, all the while working as a Sith Lord. We follow him right up to the end of Episode One and a bit beyond and learn how someone like him was able to make the Republic into an Empire.

This was an entertaining and enjoyable read. It's not quite up to the level that the Thrawn books are at, but you can at least see them from here. I really enjoyed this book, and wouldn't mind reading more.
