A Review of "Children of the Gods", the Final Cut

As I am a huge Stargate fan, I had a lot of interest in this new vision of the original SG-1 pilot, Children of the Gods.  However if you're only casually into the program or not a big sci-fi fan at all, then this may not interest you.  What Brad Wright has gone and done is create a pilot that felt more like the SG-1 fans came to know and love throughout the years instead of what the episode used to be, a television pilot that was trying to hard to be like its movie counterpart.  With a brand new score, updated visual effects, edited scenes and a voice over by Christopher Judge for the character of Teal'c, Children of the Gods is glorious once more.

Back in 1997, if you were a television show, visual effects were still not that great unless you had a really large budget which, at the time, SG-1 did not.  Brad Wright and the visual effects team have gone back and changed the wormhole puddle as well as the vortex to what they look like today.  This I think was one of the coolest edits they did simply because the old gate effect was really rather dated and just made me think of the movie.  They also went back and put new visual effects and matte paintings for some of the scenery of the episode including the Abydos pyramid, Apophis' stronghold and the city of chulak.  This edit wasn't a make or break for me and I probably wouldn't have cared either way, but it was still pretty to look at.  The biggest visual effect update is that of the final battle with the death gliders.  That has all been brought up to current CG standards which makes the ending of the episode that much more enjoyable.  My favorite edit of all though is Chris Judge's re-voice of Teal'c.  His character now sounds like he did throughout the rest of the TV show and is also much more convincing when he gives his reasons for switching sides from the Go'uld to SG-1.

Overall, this refined final cut of what should really be called the first SG-1 film is much cleaner and better edited.  Unnecessary nudity has been taken away, the score now has much more of that Joel Goldsmith feel to it and new scenes have been added and also moved around to make it feel like every other episode of SG-1 that people enjoyed for ten years.  I could go on and on about the edits, but if you are a die hard fan, you'll find them yourself.  If you didn't watch the show regularly, than this isn't going to make much difference to you, but this is a must buy for anyone who has been with the show from the beginning!  5/5

I'm only half way through this newly edited pilot and I really like it. I am curious what unnecessary nudity you mean, but I guess I'll find out.

Oh, you're talking about when they tear Shari's shirt off and we see some headlights. Aw man, I loved that part! Great pilot.

Great review. I was uncertain about this one because I thought it was going to be a rehash of the first episode and not a lot of interest. Thanks for changing my mind. Now for Stargate: Extinction!!
