My husband bought me this book, and though I'd heard of the book, I'd never even bothered to look up what it might be about. I wish I had read it earlier! It took a couple chapters to really pick up my interest, and after that I couldn't put it down. I had it completely read in one day.
Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl who lives in District 12 of the country Panem, which is what is left of what used to be the United States of America. The Capitol resides in the Rockies, perfectly poised to defend any rebellion from the surrounding 12 districts. That didn't stop an attempt from the districts, who fought against the Capitol, resulting not only in the complete destruction of District 13, but also the Hunger Games.
Every year the Capitol holds a reaping, where one girl and one boy from each district is chosen, each between the ages of 12 and 18. Those 24 chosen 'tributes' are taken to the capitol where they are prepared and trained to compete in the Hunger Games. After the 'tributes' are ready, they are put in a giant arena and have to fight to the death- only one tribute can remain to return to thier district victorious.
To avoid spoilers, that's all I'll mention, but this book is so full of twists and turns, and nail biting situations. Suzanne Collins even threw in some romance into this riveting novel. The characters are very easy to love and relate to, and you find yourself very much sucked into Katniss' world. I found myself holding my breath, biting my nails, fidgeting, and even scowling and laughing as I read the book. I very highly recommend this book to anyone who hasn't yet had the pleasure of reading it. I can't wait to start the next book in the trilogy!
