Yum Yum! My Favorite Fruits

  • Aug 10, 2009
My favorite tropical fruits. Most delightful, tasty and exotic fruits!
1
Durian
One man's poison, another man's meat (or profit? ;-)). It's the smell, baby, the smell!!! Best to take a glass of salt water after Durian as it is quite 'heaty'! Do not drink wine with Durians. It will kill.
2
Mango
This is one of the most delicious fruits of all time. Harumanis in Indonesia is my favorite. If you haven't tried that, you haven't tried real mango! It's a love fruit, by the way, if you know how to play with it ;-)
3
salak
Its been known as snake fruit by foreigners due to its exterior. However, this is quite a distinctive fruit which I've only found in Indonesia & Malaysia. They have been exported to some other Asian countries like Singapore, Hong Kong & China. Try it if you come across it. Salak Bali & Salak Pondoh (sometimes, Pondok) are best.
4
Soursop
This is another juicy fruit with refreshing flesh. It is great on itself with shaved ice or alternatively as a juice by itself or mixed with Avacado & condense milk. Yummmmmm!
5
Jambu Air
This fruit looks like wedding bells! I love the color as well as the fruit itself. A beautiful & cheerful fruit. In Indonesia and Malaysia, it is one of the ingredients in making fruit salads.
6
Mangosteen
Mangosteen is cooling and in Asia, some eat them as a companion to Durian as Mangosteen is known to have a cool down effect while Durian is 'heaty' (accordinng to the Chinese).
7
Longan
Longan is a thirst quencher and I love munching on them. A versatile fruit which can be dried and cooked with other Chinese desserts.
8
Jackfruit
This one has a nice aroma (not the same as Durian but more acceptable to the foreigners) & best if eaten with grass jelly & coconut juice. It's tasty on its own too and the seeds can be cooked and eaten as well. Very versatile.
9
Lychee
Another one of the heaty fruits. Lychee looks like Longan internally but doesn't quite taste like it. When it's in season, it's awesome!
10
Watermelon
I love watermelon. It's not only a thirst quencher, it can even be eaten as a meal! Red is beautiful!

In Los Angeles there is a vegetarian restaurant that makes barbecued Jackfruit for burritos and other sandwiches...when done correctly it tastes JUST like barbecued pork. So fascinating AND delicious. You have to try it if you're ever visiting LA!

I haven't tried BBQ jackfruit but they sell it as chips (like potato chips) in Thailand. Pretty good!

Durian at the very top of your list? If I didn't already know you and this was the first I heard of you, I would say that you are an adventurous one! ;P I've never heard of salak before, but I want to try it! I wonder if I can find it at my local market... And I'll have to try your soursop juice recipe! :)

:D Yep, I love durian but it's very expensive out of Indonesia and since I haven't been back that much, haven't gotten much of a chance to eat them (other than in sherbet or juice form). Don't think you'll find salak out of Asia, it rots pretty quickly.

I've only tried three of the fruits on your list!

Oh! They are mostly tropical fruits, that may be why. I do like all the berries and melons but since they can be quite expensive in this part of the world, I ate less of them. I'll expand on the list in a bit, must have been multi-tasking when I was doing this list :-)
