A few years ago a local ice cream shop introduced "Apple Pie" flavored ice cream. From the very first spoonful of this most delighful frozen concoction I declared that I now had a new favorite flavor of ice cream. The problem is that the shop is located in another part of the state and is only open from April to October. So where do I get my fix the rest of the year?
Thankfully my problem has been at least partially solved. Right around Thanksgiving I discovered much to my delight thatEdy's "Limited Edition Apple Pie" Ice Cream was available at my local supermarket. For those of you in the western half of the nation the product is sold under the brand name of Dreyer's. I rarely enjoy ice cream at home but without an iota of hesitation I grabbed a carton and could not get home fast enough to try it out. While my taste buds tell me that Edy's "Limited Edition Apple Pie" ice cream does not quite measure up to the freshly made and locally produced version it is a pretty darn good substitute.
I found the basic vanilla ice cream to be pleasingly rich and quite creamy. You will note just a hint of apple pie spice in the mix. Sensational! Folded in are generous amounts of tiny square apple chunks. Now what distinguishes Edy's "Limited Edition Apple Pie" Ice Cream from the local version is that Edy's chose to add small chunks of pie crust to this product as well. It certainly works for me! The flavors are distinct but never overwhelming. Although Edy's "Apple Pie" Ice Cream is now a seasonal "limited edition" flavor it would not surprise me if a decision was made to make it available year 'round. It is that good. Last time I checked Edy's "Limited Edition Apple Pie" Ice Cream was still available where I shop. I'd better stock up with enough to keep me satisfied until the local place opens up in April. Very highly recommended!
