Usually when I fly, I fly Virgin America- they have it right on so many levels that I wish all airlines would use them as a business model. American Airlines should definitely take note. Why? Well, basically American Airlines is the worst airline I've ever flown. Apparently, I'm not alone. In a Travel and Leisure 2009 of Best and Worst Airlines, American was rated … more
I bought this for cheap (not that cheap really, it's US$18) at the supermarket just last week while it's selling at the same area at the Japanese restaurant I frequent for double the price! I've never tried it but I like kokuto (black sugar) and upon checking with the staff I know it'll be something like rum. In fact, it is made with rum. The Japanese … more
This is one of the best shochu I've ever tried, not that I have tried many, most of which I tried in Japanese restaurants. Shochu is the Japanese version of Mojito and you can literally drink them without getting drunk, if you're not a bad drinker as I'm. Well, I bought this in the CitySuper (a supermart) in Hong Kong and finished the entire bottle in 4 days, that's … more
My first trial was one from Kokubo that's anti-mosquito and since I was living in China when I first got hold of this Japanese product, it was a real good one especially I did used it in the bedroom. The scent is nice, just like air freshener! I just got the second one for anti-insect yesterday from City Super (a supermarket in Hong Kong). Apparently, Sasa sells it as … more

The best dessert I've ever gotten from the supermarket! In fact, it's probably the best pudding I've ever had from Japan! If you live in Hong Kong or Singapore, chances are you can get it from the Japanese supermarkets in Isetan and Sogo.

I've had this one for many years and it's been consistent and a lot creamier than Oaso Milk. If you like it rich, this one is for you! Best when served chilled. I love keeping it in storage though. The best thing about these products from Japan is that despite the fact that they contain preservatives (I'm assuming that since it lasts more than a week!), they taste as fresh as the locally produced … more
Newest fleet of planes & the most on-time airline I've traveled on. Commonly known as SQ or SIA in Asia, Singapore Airlines is the most profitable airline in the world. It holds a good safety record and good value if you buy your tickets outside Singapore itself! Don't ask me why but it certainly feels like dumping to me for some reason. Never mind that, as a customer, you can be rest … more
The Fugu (blowfish, poisonous; one that kills if not prepared correctly), Uni (sea urchin), Basashi (horse meat), Kujira (whale), Iruca (dolphin), Okura (salmon roe) and Shirako (fish sperm) are some of the queerest food when it comes to the Japanese Cuisine. Eating seafood raw is certainly Japanese style and in some ways it has increased the Japanese life span! So, if you … more
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca 8.9 Earthquake in Japan and Asian Tsunami Across the Pacific An 8.9 earthquake (Richter scale) hit Honshu, Japan just hours ago. There was tremendous devastation everywhere. The last major event of this size in Asia was on 12-16-1920 in Gansu, China. 200,000 people died in the Gansu earthquake. The actual loss of life in Japan may not be known for weeks. … more
Travel fail doesn't even begin to describe my most recent ordeal and frustrations with American Airlines (and no, I'm not even accounting for that one time when my one hour layover turned into a ten hour one at LAS and passengers were given no information the entire time other than to wait). Earlier this week, I had lamented to one of my best friends in Tampa that … more
Now that the Japanese Yen has skyrocketed to an all time high against the US$, what are the raminifications for the world at large? Japan is after all the 2nd largest economy in the world for the majority of the last few decades, until recently overtaken by China. Japanese have a great deal of investments (direct or indirect) in the world. Japanese also holds a lot of … more
Exactly a week after the 9.0 magnitude and tsunami in northern Japan, I found myself landing in Shanghai, a city which is a mere 2 hours flight from Tokyo. Flights, I was told, are full for those trying to get out of Tokyo. It's a hectic exodus for many foreigners who study, live or vacationing in Japan. Foreign companies are chartering flights to get their staff out, no matter what the cost is! … more

Stay out of Tokyo for now. Many areas are without power and it's pretty much chaotic after the tsunami in Sendai. Most people are unsure if they are going to work on Monday either. Stay tuned!
As if an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and a 23 foot tsunami were not enough the people of Japan now have to deal with the potential fallout from a massive explosion that has rocked the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant. It is not yet clear whether massive levels of radiation have been released into the atmosphere. This powerful blast has the potential to exacerbate the problem many times over and … more

I remembered back when I was a child, there was a Japanese tv series titled "The Sinking of Japan" (A movie was later made in 2006, I believe). We love it so much so we were glued to the tv whenever the series was on. When I saw what happened to Sendai this afternoon (a city I had once visited), instinctively, THE SINKING OF JAPAN came to mind. Yes, I spent an afternoon following the news … more
For an earthquake of that magnitude, it hasn't wrecked as much havoc as it could have. The blessing lies in that it hits not the most populated area of Tokyo but Sendai instead. Yes, the tsunami caused financial damages insofar that a lot of farmlands are wiped out. Hopefully, as of now, it is not one that rivals that of the 2004 tsunami! Death tolls have climbed to 1598 (Monday) with 9500 unaccounted … more
Before I began writing on this topic, I had momentary hesitation about writing it under the topic history or Japanese. History is not my forte so the decision was made pretty soon. Then I thought about Japanese as being a language, a race or a culture or simply all things Japanese. I did take a general course in Japanese language in my 1st year … more
