Sensitive scalp or skin? Let me tell you about my shampoo.

Pros: Excellent shampoo for those sensitive to dyes, fragrances or other chemicals in shampoo.

Cons: Not available at all pharmacies.

The Bottom Line: A good product for those sensitive to fragrance, dyes or chemicals in shampoo, those with eczema or other forms of itchy, dry skin, or those preferring a more "natural" shampoo.

In recent years, my skin has become more sensitive. At various, inevitably inconvenient times, my face will turn bright red, my arms or back will itch, or hives will erupt. Generally, I need to avoid certain skin and hair products, especially those that are strongly scented or contain aloe, or I will become itchy and miserable. Shampoo can also be irritating to the scalp, or the skin it may contact, such as the skin on the back, face or neck.

Let me describe my experiences with Free & Clear Shampoo, manufactured by Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc. This shampoo omits skin irritants that are commonly found in shampoo. This particular shampoo is rather unusual that way. Free & Clear Shampoo does NOT contain dyes, formaldehyde, lanolin, fragrance or masking fragrance, parabens (wax) or protein.

What is it like, and is it a good shampoo?
The shampoo is clear, fairly thin and pale yellow in color. Let me attempt to describe the fragrance. That should not be too difficult: THERE IS NONE! No smell at all. It seems to clean my hair as well as any other shampoo. It rinses out easily and completely and leaves my hair manageable and soft. It seems pretty mild, and I would not hesitate to use it frequently. Most importantly, it does not make my scalp itch, nor irritate my face.

I will say that I always use a good conditioner after I use this product. It is not a conditioning shampoo. In my own experience, it is important to use a conditioner after using this product. One time I tried to use this shampoo without conditioner, and found it left my hair too dry and with too many tangles.

What IS in this product?

Where can I obtain this product?
There are a few ways to obtain this product. First off, some doctors' offices, particularly allergists or dermatologists, sell this product or hand out free samples. In fact, I first learned about this product from an allergist who had samples available in her waiting room. Some pharmacies carry this shampoo.
