I think that it was a marketing ploy mainly designed between Suge Knight and Puffy (at that time, that's what he called himself!) to sell records. The two "icons" of that mainstream beef were Biggie and Pac but, people forget, that they were friends, until Suge and Puffy got involved. I think it's pretty much irrelevant now that Southern rap has become mainstream.
