A close friend just introduced me to an East Coast hip hop artist called "El-P" [short for El-Producto] and I can't get enough of this guy.

For the longest time, I've felt like there was so little thought and musical effort being put into rap / hip hop that it would simply perish, eat itself or die in a series of shootings outside Hot97 in NY. Frankly, it's just boring... nice club hooks about stacking lots of paper. Thanks, but I'll pass for some well programed, slick UK drum and bass.
However, El-P has mystified me with not only his lyrical skill set but genuine quality of musical arrangement as well. Being the son of a jazz musician seems to have created a solid base for his brilliant sound which encompasses both heavy sampling and, wait for it... real musical accompaniment. I know... it's almost too shocking to fathom. The quirky yet aggressive and somewhat playful lyrics, sounds and tempos make for a great listen... like if you crossed Paul's Boutique with The Streets and added a dash of Eminem. Joy. He's a bit odd but at the same time a really fresh take on 'music' in general.
Generally speaking, El-P plays the role of MC, but is also a producer for not only himself but a host of acts on his Definitive Jux label which share this creativity. While a lot of rap and hip hop has drown in endless songs about straps, ballin and, ahem, easy goin women, El-P actually has something to say... even if it's just a masterfully crafted diss.
Bottom line, this guy makes great records.

@stephaniezhu: I love me some Andre Nickatina! And I really wouldn't call you a follower there. Most ppl don't like him... takes a trained ear. ;-] As for tracks, from I'll Sleep When You're Dead [2007], I love "Tasmanian Pain Coaster," "Smithereens" and "The League of Extraordinary Nobodies." 'League' is a bit dark but still very creative.
