After reviewing Eminems first commercial release The Slim Shady LP I decided to read the lyrics and give a listen to his next The Marshall Mathers LP. Once again I thought to myself in an angry, befuddled, and dumbfounded tone, what on Gods green Earth is this?! And this guy is number one on the billboard charts for several weeks running. What does this say about our society in general and our young people specifically that they would buy and listen to this filth?
I decided to investigate Eminems brand of rap after listening to Guilty Conscience release from the The Slim Shady LP and seeing the video on MTV. I enjoyed the video and the message the music had to relate and thought Eminem might be about something positive; an artist with something to say worth listening to. And maybe he will have positive influence on the youth that listened to him. Wrong! Very wrong! Very, very wrong!
Eminem has been in the news a lot lately, and most of the stories have been related to the ongoing struggle, trials, and tribulations with his wife; she most recently tried to commit suicide. On the The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem has devoted a song to his wife called (gasp) Kim in which he rails against her in a torrent that if put in letter form would be considered a treat worthy of criminal investigation. Here are some of the highlights:

Eminem rose to wide spread public awareness on the strength of Guilty Conscience and My Name is , back in the later part of 1999. Both of these hits are off of The Slim Shady LP. And while I will admit that both have a catchy beat and redeeming message on the surface, what lies below the surface is a whole other matter altogether. My Name is for instance was recorded in three different versions, two of which well are unmentionable here.
Eminem is one very angry, disturbed, repugnant, and socially retarded individual who sees fit to share his demented and twisted mind and screwed-up life with us! It now seems to be socially acceptable to air out our emotions in public; to parade our private lives in front of everyones noses and hope for a sympathetic ear or shoulder. Our troubled past and present seem to be license to do and say anything as if we were no longer responsible for who and what we are. The measure of a man used to be in how much he could take of life and still maintain his self-respect, dignity, and strength of character. It was a standard to be admired and respected. By that standard Eminem has failed, not only himself, but his family as well; what future could his daughter have with two parents like this!?

Whether you love him or hate him, it's hard to deny that Eminem is the best rapper today, and may be the best rapper of all time. Pros: Variation, Beat, Riveting Lyrics Cons: Vulgarity beyond anything you've heard before! I bought the Eminem CD because my 15 year old son asked for it and I wanted to see what he was listening to. The first run through appalled me.
