Hip hop might not be dead after all.

A close friend just introduced me to an East Coast hip hop artist called "El-P" [short for El-Producto] and I can't get enough of this guy.

For the longest time, I've felt like there was so little thought and musical effort being put into rap / hip hop that it would simply perish, eat itself or die in a series of shootings outside Hot97 in NY.  Frankly, it's just boring... nice club hooks about stacking lots of paper.  Thanks, but I'll pass for some well programed, slick UK drum and bass.

However, El-P has mystified me with not only his lyrical skill set but genuine quality of musical arrangement as well.  Being the son of a jazz musician seems to have created a solid base for his brilliant sound which encompasses both heavy sampling and, wait for it... real musical accompaniment.  I know... it's almost too shocking to fathom.  The quirky yet aggressive and somewhat playful lyrics, sounds and tempos make for a great listen... like if you crossed Paul's Boutique with The Streets and added a dash of Eminem.  Joy.  He's a bit odd but at the same time a really fresh take on 'music' in general.

Generally speaking, El-P plays the role of MC, but is also a producer for not only himself but a host of acts on his Definitive Jux label which share this creativity.  While a lot of rap and hip hop has drown in endless songs about straps, ballin and, ahem, easy goin women, El-P actually has something to say... even if it's just a masterfully crafted diss.

Bottom line, this guy makes great records.

@ DesignDude: Thanks man... I'm gonna have to check each of these guys out now too. Sounds like you've already heard but the Weathermen album is gonna drop later this yr. Stoked on that.

@stephaniezhu: I love me some Andre Nickatina! And I really wouldn't call you a follower there. Most ppl don't like him... takes a trained ear. ;-] As for tracks, from I'll Sleep When You're Dead [2007], I love "Tasmanian Pain Coaster," "Smithereens" and "The League of Extraordinary Nobodies." 'League' is a bit dark but still very creative.

Actually, his latest mix album is available for FREE on Def Jux site! Just add it to the cart, register on the next page and you're good to go.

I should definitely check this guy out. Thanks for sharing; I'd never heard of him before!

This guy is such a great example of the vitality of indie hip hop. His earlier project Company Flow was so far out of left field in the early '90s, and Def Jux has made visible some some amazing talent like Aesop Rock, Murs, and RJD2, just to name a few. I love the Paul's Boutique/Streets/Eminem analogy. Really nice review!

Great review! Any recs for your fave tracks? I have to say I'm always on the fence regarding rap/hip-hop ...although I did really get into Tech n9ne and Andre Nickatina my freshman year of college, only because other people were listening. Geez I'm such a follower! haha.. actually, @Friedpez is actually a huge rap fan .. Ludacris and T.I. to name a few!

Wiki

El-P, aka El Producto, is one of hip-hop's most obstinate and adventurous pioneers, combining a lo-fi old-school aesthetic with a progressive rock musician's inclination to push boundaries. He has never succumbed to the demands of corporate rap, instead choosing to pursue his own decidedly non-commercial direction. In the mid-'90s, he developed a strong reputation with the groundbreaking trio Company Flow, a band whose achievements include El-P-produced LP Funcrusher Plus on Rawkus Records, a label considered by many one of the best for intelligent hip-hop. Over the group's auspicious stint together, he proved he was himself capable of intense lyricism as well as sonic production so powerful it could stand on its own. In the latter part of the '90s, El-P was also a collaborator with Blackalicious, Mos Def, and Dilated Peoples.

In 2001, after releasing one last album with Harlem rappers Cannibal Ox, the group chose to amicably pursue their own directions. El-P then started his own label, Def Jux -- later renamed Definitive Jux to avoid a suit from Def Jam. Between label operations and work on a proposed solo album from former Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha, he found the time to work on his own solo release, Fantastic Damage, which saw the light of day in May 2002. A critical masterpiece, it was followed by a real change-up, 2004's High Water, which was part of the Matthew Shipp-curated Blue Series and teamed the producer with Shipp, William Parker,...
