After playing with both services for a better part of the conference, I think it's pretty clear who the clear winner is. Check out my review of the services here.

I can't say I agree as they both did the same. It just depended on who was using the service more and at what time. I used Foursquare because I didn't feel like signing up for another service and my friends are already on Foursquare which is important because I don't accept every friend's request. There were a few times were I noticed over 300 people checked into several places on Foursquare during SxSW. That's more than enough connections for me to make. However, my friend's who used Gowalla spoke highly of it on several occasions. When I first saw it's interface I was compelled to ask my friend what app she was using and it was Gowalla. Gowalla was surprising and tempting, but I had to resist. Foursquare was where it was at.

So you're saying you agree then. =P Gowalla is pretty but it doesn't tell you if over 300 people are at a location. If the point of the services is to bring people together to have fun, Gowalla would need to do a lot more in that department.

I agree and I don't because I've never used it so I don't know how much better it could be for me. While Foursquare shows how many people are there, who's really loading that entire list? You'll see the first 20 maybe 30. Beyond that you wouldn't really care. You just need to find 1 person that you know to be tempted into relocating to another place. I think Gowalla at least solves that. On the other hand, Gowalla also allows for comments and photos. This is something that I love in Brightkite and sorely miss in Foursquare. Each has its pros and cons. I just happened to catch the Foursquare bug first and see no reason to switch.

Foursquare is not the first geolocating app to surface, but it seems to have gotten more of a foothold than some of the others. I had another called Loopt on my iPhone for a bit, but it's just no fun when it's just two of you pinging each other back and forth. Love the idea of a large social game via mobile, love that's it a way to let you know where your friends are. Love that you can compete with friends to show off how often you go out to cool places and what a scenester you are! But I don't like that many places (at least the ones I frequent) haven't been added to their database of establishments. Foursquare is a location-based social networking website, software for mobile devices, and game. Users "Check-in" at venues using text messaging or a device specific application. They are then awarded points and sometimes "badges." The service was created by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai; Crowley had previously founded the similar project Dodgeball which Google bought and shelved in 2009.
Foursquare allows registered users to connect with friends and update their location. Points are awarded on weekends and non-business hours for "checking in" at venues. Users can choose to have their Twitter accounts updated when they check in. In version 1.3 of their iPhone application, Foursquare enabled push-notification of friend updates, which they call "Pings." Users can earn badges by checking in at locations with certain tags or for check-in frequency. The company has stated that users will be able to add their own custom badges to the site in the future. If a user has checked-in to a venue more than anyone else, on separate days, and they have a profile photo, they will be crowned "Mayor" of that venue, until someone else earns the title. Users can create a "To Do" list for their private use and add "Tips" to venues that other users can read.
Foursquare is now available worldwide.
