A Great Zany, Disco Dance Funk Band of the 2000's

  • Mar 16, 2009
Sugar and Gold is a five piece ensemble who hail from San Francisco.  Their sound can best be described as a fusion of electro-synth disco dance funk coupled with pop and rock.  I know, it sounds like a mouthful, as well as a questionable combination of music genres, but trust me, Sugar and Gold manages to merge them all seamlessly.

I first discovered them a while back when they were another local band's opening act.  Now I'm not usually one to catch opening acts;  either I show up just in time for the main attraction, or I'm mingling at the bar.  That fateful night, though, I was doing the latter, but as soon as I heard those synth beats and funky guitar rifts, I knew that I had to make my way to the stage, and I was not disappointed.  When I got to the front of the stage, with the exception of the group's one lone female member, Fatima, the four other guys in the band looked like they had just gotten off the set of a 1970's porno.

I've seen them about ten times over the past few years, and every time I've seen them, they've had some outrageous get-up on.  Fatima's usually sporting some sort of gold lurex or lamé, plus chunky accessories, while the guys stick to some 1970's staples.  I've seen some curly shag haircuts, aviator sunglasses, baseball jerseys, sailor's hats, hot pants, way too tight pants, unitards, not to mention gratuitous showing of chest hair.  Sometimes they put on Kermit and Ms. Piggy masks just for kicks.

Costumes aside, Sugar and Gold sure can put on a great performance.  They deliver some groovy tunes that are really danceable, plus the band has great stage presence and really look like they're having a ton of fun on stage while they're dancing and gyrating.  They eerily ooze of sex appeal with a shot of inappropriateness, plus a strong dose of marvelousness.  I always leave a Sugar and Gold show feelin' kinda dirty, yet awesome.

In terms of the listenability of their music, I would give them a +4.  They're fun to listen to when I'm driving or just hanging around the house (you can check out their music on their Myspace page, especially the crowd favorite, Do It Well), but in terms of putting on an entertaining show, Sugar and Gold are definitely +5.

On a side note, Sugar and Gold are currently touring other parts of the U.S., mostly notably playing SXSW, and I know that there are a lot of Austinite Lunchers, so go check them out!

They don't have any official videos or anything, so this is the best video that I could find of them.  Here they are singing "Do It Well":
