Undiscovered Indie Folk Gem

Mark Darling is a two-man indie folk band featuring brothers Mark (vocals, guitar) and David Darling (drums). They write short, mostly acoustic tunes that juxtapose relatively simple songwriting with poetic lyrics and soaring, delicate vocals.

For me, the highlight of Mark Darling's music is the singing, which is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley. He uses vibrato to great effect without overdoing it, both on powerful lower-range vocals and gentle falsettos. The vocals lend an air of otherworldliness to the songs, making them feel more heartbreaking and transcendent than typical folk fare. They're really some of the most beautiful vocals I've ever heard, especially live.

Particular favorites of mine include "Whitewood," "Oh the Endless Sky," "Cinnamon Thieves," and "Lost at Sea," one of the few Mark Darling songs to prominently feature electric guitar. Mark recently relocated from Colorado to Virginia, so the band isn't playing together at the moment, but Mark is still playing and recording solo from time to time.

Whenever I think of Folk music I think of relax..low key music and Mark Darling def suits this very well. I listened to the song that the other reviewer posted, "seagulls". I can really imagine myself on a beach, relaxing in the sun listening to this..add a margarita to the list and ill have a perfect day!
