Christmas Movies To Watch Every Year

  • Oct 26, 2010
Yes, Christmas is nipping at your heels and it's time to get all festive with the inevitable round of Christmas films. Again. Get in the mood with James' Official Cinematic Chrimbo Cookoff. (Needless to say that Jingle All the Way didn't make the cut.) ** Potentially unfestive bad language follows **
1
Scrooged
Apart from Bill Murray's embarrassing emotional meltdown at the end, it's actually a pretty good rendering of Dickens' novel. Director Richard Donner based it on a TV producer he knew, apparently. So many great quotes.

2
Home Alone: The Complete Collection
Chris Columbus hit the ball out of the park with this one, and it's guaranteed to bring the kid out of everyone. Macaulay Culkin (who's dating Mila Kunis, can you believe?) turns his house into a theme park of pain, and Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern play the clown parts.

3
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
Deeply disturbing. The whole Dr Seuss thing is very very wrong.
4
It's a Wonderful Life
Frank Capra tugs at the heart strings hard enough to cause a seizure in this oft-copied ode to life. Everyone says they won't cry at the end but I all I see is Niagara Falls all around me.
5
Gremlins
Gremlins hasn't aged so well, but Pheobe Cates' story about how she discovered Santa Claus' identity is priceless. I haven't heard a soundtrack need redubbing this badly since Scarface.
6
The Muppet Christmas Carol
I wish they'd make a Special Edition where they silenced Michael Caine's singing, but otherwise I approve this message.

7
Bad Santa (2003)
Billy Bob Thornton and John Ritter reign supreme. Quote of the year: "In case you haven't noticed, I'm a mother****ing dwarf!"

8
Die Hard
Perhaps the greatest action script ever written, and certainly one of the best executed, it's still somehow a Christmas flick. What's more primal than the need to reach wife family at Christmas, especially if that wife is divorced and being held by terrorists headed by Alan Rickman? Here's the short version:
