A list of general apps to help get the most out of your iPhone. I'll have more list focused on specific areas soon.
Facebook for iPhone
Facebook, in an app. Need i say more. I for one think the app is much better than the website.
Kindle App screen photo
If you read, this is a must have, you may not always carry a book with you but how many times have you left he house with out a phone? Exactly! With the kindle app you can take book anywhere and never miss a beat. Combine this with a new kindle and you are gonna be a happy reader.

Mint.com (iPhone App)
Finance at your finger tips. All the great things about Mint.com on your iPhone, plus alerts and notifications. If you use mint, you gotta have the app.
The best app to look up Wikipedia information on the go. It's a basic app that formats Wikipedia for the iPhone better than safari. if you use Wikipedia on a regular basis this is an app for you.
For the sports fan... A good free app with Facebook Connect capabilities. It gives scores, point spreads and allows you to comment on each game.
Tweetdeck App
A solid twitter app that's free. Be sure to sync your account to the desktop client to get the best experience.
What's the name of this song? Ask Shazam. There are several other apps on the market, so far I have gotten the most hits using this app. When this comes in handy: Tuning into the radio midway through a set and only hearing part of a song, shopping, at a concert... Just think how much time you could have saved if you just new the song within a few seconds of hearing it.
Pandora icon
A good music app to discover music you already enjoy.
Fandango Movie Showtimes & Tickets (iPhone App)
Probably the best app for looking up showtimes. I have tried several other's and this one stuck around the longest. You can tell the app which theaters are your favorites, browse by movie, or search for what's nearby. I only go to the movies occasionally, but when I do I look up the movie time using the fandango app.

What did you think of this list?

Thanks for directing me to this. I've been hoping that someone would create a list of practical apps! I've got four of these already, but I'll be downloading the others (don't know about the sports one though :P). Thanks! :)

Thanks for the list! I don't have an iPhone, but most of these (or equivalent) are available for my Windows Mobile. For some reason, AT&T charges non-iPhone people for Pandora so I can't get that one and I've wanted it FOREVER.

:O You NEED to get Pandora! It's so friggin' cool looking!

I *would*, but I'm not going to pay a monthly fee for it. AT&T makes all non-iPhone users pay!!!
