The Best stuff from 2009...

  • Oct 26, 2009
  • by
Looking for gift ideas or just looking for some cool stuff. Below is my list of things I discovered and really enjoyed in 2009. Unfortunately Rose Bowl tickets didn't make the list this year.
1
iPhone 3Gs
The 3G was great but the 3Gs is awesome. It has truly revolutionized the phone and the entire mobile industry. I use my iPhone for everything, I spend less time at the computer because I no longer have to be at the computer to do many of the same tasks. I just wish the battery lasted longer.
2
Kindle 2: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device
Seriously... This thing is awesome. I have cut down on my book budget, magazine subscriptions and my time spent browsing in book stores. The Kindle 2 is a time saver and makes it easy to just keep on reading.
See the full review, "The kindle 2, dragging books into the 21st century".
3
REI
REI
The best place in the world to shop from adventure sports gear to sports gadgets this place has it all. Become a member and get dividends each year... Bike racks, ski racks, beach cruiser, back-packing tent, skis... etc. The best time to buy is off season. want ski gear buy it in the spring, want a bike buy it in the winter... REI = Really Enjoy It!

Album Cover
By  Rodrigo Y Gabriela, I think this is one of the best albums of the year IMHO. My only regret of 2009 is that I have yet to see them in concert. If you want to diversify your music collection, give this album a try, all the music comes from 2 guitars and that's it.
5
Mint Logo
Speaking of budgets, before Mint I was killing myself with spreadsheets and quicken. My Saturday routine was spent going over budgets and looking for opportunities. With Mint, not only is the website great but the iPhone app keeps me up-to-date on the go. Once again saving me time AND money.
6
Lunch.com
A great place to share opinions and discover new stuff from people with shared interests. A great place to hang out, make the world a better place by participating, but also a great place to learn.
7
The Last Kingdom, Book Cover
Thank you Kindle! A friend of mine recommended this book and once I started I never put it down until I got through the entire series. If you haven't read any of Bernard Cornwell's stuff I recommend this series as a good start.

nkeid
This can become addicting... Stop wearing someone elses shoes create your own (Air Jordan's, who's that, how about Air Olson's). I personally created 3 pairs of shoes and created another pair as a gift. It's simple and fun, log on, pick your sport and the shoe, then create your own design, if you aren't ready to buy you can save the design in your "locker" to ponder and compare. It takes 4-6 weeks to create and ship. At the very least give it a try.
See the full review, "Design your own shoes... it's fun and easy".
9
La Quinta
Need a vacation... La Quinta is a great getaway resort in the Palm Springs Desert of California. The resort itself is excellent, spa, golfing, tennis, pools, hot tubs and few good restaurants on the resort and several just a short car ride away. If you want to get away for a relaxing weekend, this is a great place anytime of year.
10
Store Front
If you decide to do breakfast in the Redondo Beach Riviera this year or the next this is place to go. Good coffee, great service, and a nice breakfast menu.
See the full review, "A great breakfast and coffee spot...and they have flowers too".
11
Netflix
Another great time save. Netflix alone is a great service and if you watch movies on a regular basis or are trying to catch up on past TV series (Arrested Development, Always Sunny in Philadelphia) Netflix is time and money saver. Netflix Watch instantly delivers content to your computer or other devices (Check the site). Not ready to commit, they always have a free trial and you can cancel anytime.
12
Wavestorm Surfboard - 2008 Model
A great beginner board on the cheap at Costco. I did some research when looking for a foam beginner board and the Wavestorm was the cheapest on the market. Board shops wanted $350.00 for 8' foam boards and the cheapest i could find on craigslist was 150.00, used. A must buy for the beginner, unfortunately you have to wait for the spring.
13
Hulu Logo
If it wasn't for sports and HBO I might have given up on DirecTV. Hulu desktop, assuming you have a computer connected to your TV, is a great service, you can subscribe to TV shows just like scheduling the DVR to record, allowing you to watch shows when you want. Several caveats, the content is not immediately available and CBS is still not playing ball, but hulu does provide search feature that pulls up episodes from the CBS website.
14
Annual Pass
If you are like me and make annual trips to 2 or more national parks a year then the National Parks pass is a must.

They finally got it right and it works great.

I LOVE Rodrigo y Gabriela but I don't have that album. Thanks for the reminder, Jim. I was lucky enough to randomly be shopping at Amoeba Records one day when they did an in-store performance. They are so rad!

That's awesome, I'm very jealous. I missed their LA tour in October, hoping they come back around soon.

11:11 and the Bernard Cornwell stuff look interesting...I love Yellow Vase...could have sworn you didn't like surfing...and umm...Air Olson's? haha

Someone else was raving about Mint.com. I have been lazy with my money management because it was such a pain to import everything into Quicken and balance. Sounds like this is pretty painless. BTW, great list!

Mint is a breeze, it aggregates everything unlike quicken or any other finance software I'v sampled. Plus they have a great iPhone App.

I'm so with you on the iPhone 3GS and hahahahahaha at Air Olson's!  Are they anything like Kanye's Air Yeezys? :P  Nice list!

I never heard of 11:11. What kind of music is it?

Here is a link to the wiki Lunch of the band Rodrigo Y Gabriela. They have an interesting story of the influences that lead them to where they are today.
