Great support for the first year of motherhood.

These days it is hard to find a new mom who doesn't have a Boppy Pillow. While basic pillows are alright for propping a baby to breast or bottle feed, I can tell you from experience that the Boppy makes things infinitely easier. It is a lot firmer than a regular pillow, so instead of two or three regular pillows you just need one Boppy. This is especially helpful if you are a first time mom and plan on breastfeeding. While nursing is very natural, it isn't always easy for a new baby and mom. So anything that helps the process is worth its weight in gold. You would do OK without it, but I don't recommend it.

Design: The Boppy is shaped to fit around the waist and support your arms and your baby while breastfeeding. It has many other uses that are facilitated by its design, read below. The Boppy has a removable cover, but I still used a burp cloth over it so I don't have to wash it after every feeding. Considering the increasingly obese population in the US, they also now make the Boppy with an expandable middle so it can fit any size waist comfortably. I have the standard one and I can't imagine it fitting anyone over 160 pounds.

Aside from breast/bottle feeding, the Boppy is great for propping the baby on his/her back to lounge. When the baby is a little older you can use it for tummy time to support the baby at the chest. Then it is extremely helpful when the baby is learning to sit, that protective cushion all around will give you peace of mind and provides gentle support for the baby. I even found the Boppy helpful for sleeping while pregnant, you can get creative on how to use it. It is a great cushion for the mother to sit on the first couple of weeks after giving birth. Now that my daughter is 9 months old I don't have that many uses for it. I place it around her when she sits on the potty so she doesn't crawl away and can have toys in front of her (potty at 9 months?! Yes, we practice elimination communication). When she started crawling I also used it as a barrier to keep her within a certain area - she did learn to climb over it pretty fast though.

Value: For an item so basic it does seem like $30 is too much, and I agree. Plus if you want an extra cover expect to pay an extra $10-20. If it is your first baby though and you are having a baby shower, do register for a Boppy. If you don't, chances are someone will buy it anyway, or you can get it with a gift card. I received mine as a gift from a mom who never got around to using it and it was brand new. Once you have one though, you can use it for all your kids - however many you happen to have.

Chances are, you have already seen the Boppy everywhere. Here is a glimpse:
