This infant carrier must be one of the most popular items on most baby registries, and for good reason. As my due date grew nearer, and the shower came and went, the boxes of baby gear began to pile on. We pushed them aside, stacking them into an intimidating mountain which took on a life of its own. Where did all this stuff come from?! Did it mean we were seriously about to have a teensy tiny human in our house for REAL!? Can you say identity crisis!??! The Bjorn in particular seemed like some ode to yuppie parenthood that really didn't jive with our previously assumed self image.
In any event, we soon found that much of that pile of modern convenience was actually pretty darn useful. Some of it even turned out to be fun!
The BabyBjorn was enormously convenient, and wound up going everywhere with us. In particular, it seems to be a big hit with most dads we know. It allows you a physical closeness with baby while out and about (as opposed to a stroller), and really helps make the connection with some hands on parenting for new daddy's.
PORTABLE, COMFORTABLE & EASY TO CLEAN Speaking of strollers... it is MUCH easier is it to pop on the Bjorn than lug the stroller and try to maneuver around store isles or crowds at a local farmers market. The snapping on and off is very easy to learn and master, and equally possible to accomplish when you're solo - which is saying something. I could also make easy and quick adjustments throughout the wearing, if baby shifted weight and the straps would loosen at all - it was just one tug of the strap to tighten back up. It's a snap to keep clean, and took all sorts of messiness in stride - we just wiped off the mess of the moment and kept on steppin.
COMFY & SECURE RIDE FOR BABY From baby's perspective, it's a great ride. They have the comfort and security of feeling close to you - which is especially good when at crowded events or stores that may otherwise be intimidating to them with so many new sights and sounds. That's mainly referring to when they're "face-in" and turned towards you. Once they get big enough to hold their own, and face-out - most babies LOVE that sense of exploration and they get a much better birds eye view than down in the stroller.
In terms of comfort, the Bjorn does an excellent job of distributing the weight of baby and my back never once ached after wearing it. My daughter felt very securely fastened in - which is an issue some people have with slings. Note: I was a big sling-wearer and am a total proponent of wearing your baby as much as possible and most other "Attachment Parenting" philosophies. That said, most slings are not as easy to whip on as this is, and require a bit more adjustment to get baby really snugly settled. For me, I loved having both. Also, as I mentioned, I think men are much more comfortable with the Bjorn than with a sling - both physically and from the "image" perspective.
STYLE & DURABILITY I've noticed the color options have expanded - though we liked basic black. It's versatile and easy for both parents to agree on, I found.
It also held up great over time, and still seems like new. I'm sure it will be a great hand me down, or get used should we embark on this wild ride again in the future.
I've also purchase a few of the other products this brand makes, including a stool and potty chair. Both are very nicely made, good quality products with modern design, clean lines and contemporary colors. They seem to be carving out a good name for the brand overall.
As a father of twins, we know it's hard to not always have your hands full as a new parent. With the BabyBjorn, my wife and I can each take one kid and walk with our hands free around the house or around the block. Nice products.
